Another tyre question.

My car is fairly new and came fitted with four Dunlop Sport 01 tyres size 215/55/16 97W.

After getting a puncture, the garage has replaced one with a Michelin Premacy size 215/55/16 93W.

I know the 97 and 93 are the load index, does it matter about the different make and load index?

It doesn't matter about the make, as long as they are the same tread pattern.

Not sure about the load index ... maybe don't put the heavy person on that side? lol.
  • you may want to check with the manufacturer of the car as i have heard of insurance claims not paying out due to a car being fitted with tyres which were not to manufacturers spec or recommended by the manufacturer.

Check your hand book and look for the axle weight limits front and back as long as the load index is sufficent for the axle limit then it should be ok. Is the tread pattern similar?

What's on the spare? Could you swap that over with the spare (unless it's a spacesaver of course!)

I like the idea of placing passengers according to weight. Do I weigh them or judge by eye?

It's a lease car so I am more concerned with safety/handling than insurance problems. I thought they were trying to fob me off with a cheap alternative, but looking on the internet, the Michelin is more expensive and gets much better reviews.
Despite a complicated tread pattern they look very similar which is why I didn't notice when they put it on.

I could swap the one from the steel spare, but from the answers above, it doesn't seem worth it.
    Thanks
    Chris.

You may find this interesting regarding Michelin tyres.
  • Hi Chris,

I've found that with tyres it is best to change them in 2's to keep the balancing correct and the tread wear even. So if I was in your position I would change the other tyre to another Michelin Premacy and keep the other tyre spare just in case you get a puncture on the other two Dunlops.
If you just change one tyre, the drive might seem a bit bumpy after the Dunlop has worn down more than the Michelin.

The car has only done 500 miles so the tyres are virtually new. The lease company wasn't too keen on replacing the punctured one as it was, so I can't see them agreeing to put on another Michelin!
That was why I was concerned that I'd been fobbed off with an inferior tyre with a lower load index, but that doesn't particularly seem to be the case.

Your worrying for nothing, as its a lease car I assume the tyre place had to get permission to fit the tyre? At the same would have been informed on which tyres we allowed to be fitted. These places are very strict about when and what they allow to be fitted.

I find Primacy to be a good tyre, and it's nothing like the Energy. Anyway like someone said the OP could put the michellin in the boot and use the spare, unless its a space saver.
