It's so easy for people to take offence, where no offence was intended.;) Remember that we cannot see a member/poster's facial expressions or body language and we cannot hear the intonation of their speech.........when they post on these boards.
Are we all friends again? Is everyone happy and chilling nicely and looking forward to a good weekend? Good, that's settled then.:D10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. Can I just say, Nile, how nicely and diplomatically you diffused a potentially uncomfortable thread. I know Calley meant no offence and you explained it all beautifully. Nice to know we're looked after by such a thoughtful board guide. Thanks.0

to be honest, the best place to start, as mentioned here would be auction houses (not being sarky but you can find them in the yellow pages - https://www.yell.com ).calleyw wrote:Not trying to be sarcastic. I know they need a specialist but they need to find one first. But they have no idea where to start to find one.

It is hard to find the right person to autheticate things like this, as you know yourself. if its a football player - then the club would be the 1st stop to go, if it is a singer then its harder. You say its part of this countrys history, it would also depend on how old the letter actually is, i mean, if its 1950's or 1850's it will make a difference on how to go about it. I mean, if its newer (50's +) then there are loads of roads to take, but if it is very old then there are only a couple.
Best as i said above is to look through the yellow pages and look for a auction house in your area and to call them up and ask for an appointment to see the specilist or auctioneer who might beable to assist you, by either giving you a name of a person who he/she thinks will beable to help you or actually giving you an estimate.
Good luck and i hope your friend sorts it all out and gets ir proper value
oh yeh, it may sound obvious but alot of people dont think about it. If the letter is on paper, it might bea good idea to put the paper in a polly pocket to protect it, and to seal it with selotape so it is virtually waterproof. Would be a disaster if coffee or that was spilt on to it.

dont worry about it ambergold and calleyw - it was a simple enough comment callewy made do my post, and somthing i never thought about. When sombody posts, and you think they are shouting at another person, you have to remember as it has been said above that the person who has posted it, might not mean it, and its been interprited by you the wrong way. I should know, i do it alot. I wouldnt worry about it though, were all helpful here, and its what friends are forcalleyw wrote:Oh Ambergold,
Please don't be scared to post, that is why I said in my reply that I was not being sarcastic. Because there was nothing wrong with mclaren's reply. As he was right they do need a specialist. But I have no idea where to start. That is why I posted here asking the question the first place.
I did not think I was ticking them off.
Oh I feel bad now. I am nice person in real life honest.
I would hate to think that I put someone off for posting.

If a post IS rude or sarky (in a bad way sarky) then i can understand why people will be a bit annoyed, but i know the board guides will remove all the offending posts and will put everything right.

I will let them know about the auction houses. But also believe they have a plan that has developed over the last few days up their sleeve.
I think it is already in a plastic bag. But will make sure it is.
Thanks again. And thanks for not taking offence
I promise to play nice :A
Take care

If its worth money don't put it in a normal plastic pocket for any length of time as the plastic will damage the document. They should get a proper archive quality presentation pocket and ideally some acid free paper to place the document between to protect it some more. Also avoid over handling as grease and acid on peoples hands will damage the document too.0

So who is it of then?
My boyfriend used to collect autographs and used to take his to a specialist somewhere near Liverpool Street Station. Then they used to give him a certificate of authenticity. Sorry I don't know where it is but we came out of the entrance where McDonalds is and then went to an indoor shopping arcade almost opposite it. Sorry I cant be more specific.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
Have you thought of contacting the Antiques Roadshow? I know it seems a bit dumb, but they might help - I've seen them authenticate an Agatha Christie letter before. Just a thought.
