authenticating a signature

Right now this is a bit of strange one.

A friend of mine asked me about this and I had no idea. They have hand written signed letter from someone famous and important in this countries history. Now they think it is real and not a fake and want to find out if it is.

And then of course how much it is worth. Because looking around on their behalf it does look like it could be worth a little bit of money.

In essence the question is where can they get the letter and the signature authenticated. So if they wish to sell it they can sell it.

Thanks in advance.

Yours

Calley

talking to a specilist on the subject. i know in shops when it was signature - they checked the loops of the curls of the letters, and the length :)

    Hi Calley,

Christies will give you a free auction estimate of your item. You need to register online and can upload a picture of the letter at:

    Hope this helps.

Best bet might be to ring one of the big auction houses and ask them.

Not trying to be sarcastic. I know they need a specialist but they need to find one first. But they have no idea where to start to find one.

    Have a look here, Calley:

It's the National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers' website where they have a list of their members with contact details. You can also search by area.

    Oh Ambergold,

Please don't be scared to post, that is why I said in my reply that I was not being sarcastic. Because there was nothing wrong with mclaren's reply. As he was right they do need a specialist. But I have no idea where to start. That is why I posted here asking the question the first place.

I did not think I was ticking them off.

Oh I feel bad now. I am nice person in real life honest. :( I would hate to think that I put someone off for posting.

    Nile,

    Thanks for this.

I really did not think I was being gruff or sarcastic. And that was the point I was trying to make. That I was not being sarcastic. As I thought my reply could came across as that. And that was exactly what I was trying to avoid.

Looks like I put my foot right in it then.

I apologise now if any anyone thought I was being rude or sarcastic to Mclaren. That was not my intention.

Thankyou to everyone that has replied.
