Free product to speed up Windows??

I've a PC running Windows XP that I use from time-2-time. (I mainly use a laptop that runs Linux Ubuntu). PC running Windows is running slower & slower. I've emptied the re-cycle bin, de-fragg-ed the hard-drive, cleaned out IE of cookies etc. etc..

I know there are various product that claim to speed up Windows...any recommendations?? Particularly free ones??

Otherwise I fear I'll need to re-install the beast .. and where did I put those disks??

Cheers & Thanks in advance...

The easiest thing to do is probably back up your files and reinstall.

Windows seems to need a bit of a spring-clean every now and then, and by the time you mess around with a load of programs that probably don't do much, you could have had it done already.

This might give you some ideas, though frankly reinstalling Windows is both quicker and more effective. The only things I can really recommend are Double Driver, nLite and this guide to slipstreaming.

How much RAM are you running Windows with?

You could always put Linux on that PC as well.

2Gb (& I remember the 1st Mainframe I worked on had 64k - and that ran a small insurance company... Sigh!)

Aye: But I still need Windoze for a couple of things (TomTom Home, iTunes...)

    Cheers guys!

  • You could give PageDefrag from the Microsoft Systernals tools a run, although as Marty suggested it's generally easier to just start from the beginning again.
