If you are thinking about doint IT helpdesk work, you might be worth looking into the A+ qualification, there is a good book by Mike Meyers (not the insane guy out of halloween or austin powers)

you can find it here for under 30 quid

Hope that your course is going well WiseMonkey & thank you too for starting the thread! :)
  • Hi Wise Monkey?

Well done you, for getting over what happened at school and moving on. You mention that your exam results from school weren't the best. I'm not going to ask how bad they were, but just pass a few comments.

Most employers are looking for GCSE's in English and Maths. If you've not got these retake them as soon as feasibly possible. This doesn't necessarily cost a lot of money as an external candidate. You may find that there are a lot of local groups that offer tuition in basic maths and English for free and this would be a great starting point. Some libraries offer basic tuition for free and there are software programmes out there that are very helpful. Give it your best shot.

Take the European Computer Driving Licence or City and Guilds equivalent. I did the latter and it was free at a local outreach centre for a college. This should give you a certificate. Employers are more convinced most of the time by a certificate than someone saying I can do this, that and the other, but with no proof.

I also received free courses from Learn Direct a couple of years ago and these included how to make web pages with MS Frontpage. Great introduction to Web site design.

Just keep asking and don't give up. Afterall when you look at successful people the only real difference between them and everyone else is that they were prepared to do stuff that nobody else had the energy or motivation to do!

    Good Luck
