is 0845 to become chargeable in November?

I am looking at having an 0845 no and I was told that it will be free for me and 4p/1p for the customer (free to BT call plans) I am being told that this may be phased out by Offcom in NOvember and I would be facing charges - does anyone know if that is true - they are trying to get me to have an 0844 no instead

A number of telephone companies (BT is one) have added most 0845 numbers to those which are 'inclusive' in call plans (01, 02 and 03 numbers). For example, those on BT's Unlimited Weekend Plan get inclusive 0845 calls at weekends, those on their Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan get inclusive 0845 calls at evenings and weekends.

It is unlikely they will ever become free to call like 0500, 0800, 0808 and 00800 numbers.

If you're thinking about getting an 0845 number for a business, I'd advise against because more people are now aware that 0845
numbers, like 0844 and 087x numbers are 'revenue sharing' and some of the cost of the customer's call goes to the company being called. Just publish your business 01 or 02 number and leave it at that.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • 0845 and 0870 have been cancelled by most providers already.

I signed up for an 0870 one when i do my online insurance quotes, If i put my landline some of these companies are on the phone before i have even finished the quote.
Strange they dont seem too keen on phoning me on my 0870 number.

I cancelled my number when the company said i would be charged if someone calls it.

This i presume is because BT now offer these calls free, so they cannot make any money from them.

0845 numbers are still readily available and 0845/0870 calls are not FREE from BT .

Nothing to do with BT. It was OFCOM who ruled that the cost of calling cannot be used to pay for the delivery costs of the call - so 0870 no longer becomes self-financing, and this is the case across the board with ALL providers.

If you want someone to blame - it is OFCOM, and OFCOM alone.
