Anyone have advice re laptop for DS who is about to start A Levels, so would need it for coursework:A, but would also like to use the internet and play pc games smoothly even if the graphics aren't top notch. He would consider a desktop. Budget £600. Any tips about model/specs/etc would be greatly received.

    TIA:j
A good gaming laptop will easily go into the £800+ range and is quite frankly a waste of money as you will not be able tp upgrade apart from memory and HDD.
I hate to say it but check out the refurb section at PCworld, they are some good bargains.
For your basic internet WP needs any modern laptop will be fine but try to get one with a big HDD
  • Can anyone have a look at this laptop and tell me if it has the specs necessary for both gaming/internet surfing and A level work please:-

Ahmed thatnks for the heads up, we will have a look over the week-end:beer:

I agree with most of your suggestions although a hybrid hard drive (HDD) is not necessary as an ordinary hard (HD)drive will do. Also in there is not need to worry about a large hard drive in the first place as you can always add an external hard drive on later if you really need one! I still consider an Acer Aspire 5715 from Amazon is all you need for £299 (free delivery)

Computeractive has given 5 stars to the new acer aspire one A110L which costs just £235 but only has the Linux system or for those wanting XP home then they recommend the Advent 4211 at £280 and also given 5 stars. Both are mini laptops.

Is this the Acer A110L which Curry and Comet are selling at £199 this weekend?

Great price although I would go for a laptop with an XP system and not Linux

You mean HHD rather than HDD if you're refering to Hybrid Hard Drives, just to clear that up.
  • All the cheap and best selling store you can find in http://www.checkcost.co.uk/laptops/c/4220/

I have bought a cheap and best laptop from eBuyer from CheckCost.

I got it from ebuyer as I have seen they have reasonable price compare to other store listed over there.

So compare and have a deal !!

I dont know if anyone else has said about this, but...

My lappie cost me £50 from PC world - when they had the free/£300 off a laptop with orange broadband... and it had just been reduced from £450 :D

In fairness I did have problems with orange (I got out of an 18 month contract early because they couldnt fix my problem - i was only with them for two months.) To be honest, I did rack up £50 worth of calls to them but then I claimed it all back, including my initial broadband fees.

So thats a £300 off laptop, and broadband for free for two months (when it worked)

    Now thats moneysaving.
