What would be the general consensus on these two models as value for money, reliabillity etc. It will be used mainly for MS Office applications and watching DVDs on the road.

I travel a great deal so am looking for mobility. Obviously the 2nd is lighter etc. but is quite a bit more pricey. Both are from Currys (normally my last port of call for a computer, buit these do seem a good deal) and are list price minus 10% using an online discount voucher (but excl delivery).

    Model 1:
    TOSHIBA A100-147 £450
Intel Core Duo T2050 Processor 1.6GHz
    533 MHz FSB
    2 MB Cache
    1024 MB RAM
    60 GB Hard Drive
    DVD ReWriter SuperMulti
    15.4" Widescreen TruBrite Display
    Microsoft Windows Media Center
128mb Intel UMA 945 integrated Graphics
    1 year FREE warranty

    Model 2:
PHILIPS X56 Thin and Light £630
    Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 Processor 1.83GHz
    667 MHz FSB
    2 MB Cache
    1024 MB RAM
    80 GB Hard Drive
    Dual Layer DVD ReWriter MultiDrive
    12.1" Widescreen Display
    Microsoft Windows Media Center
    224MB Intel GMA950 integrated graphics
    1 year FREE warranty

    Any thoughts appreciated.

All of that is a doddle other than Football manager which is a very hungry number crunching program

I think both will do what you are looking for although as you have said the Phillips will be easier to transport.

I have recently looked at both of these and I must say that the Phillips does look cheaply made. The internal spec is good for the money but the Toshiba appears better put together. I really do not like the finish of the Phillips.

Also, the Tosh is £599 in store so it is a decent 'saving'.

    I have just raised my budget a bit to include: Tosh Satellite U200-161 (nice quality)@ £809 using Currys code and a further £40 off with Quidco;

    Sony FJ3S @ £809 same Currys deal plus Quidco for further £40 savings;

HP Pavillion DV2000 range (my favourite by far) various prices from £580+ depending on spec.(cheapest so far at MISCO).

    Hope this helps

When buying from Comet remember to get a Virgin credit card to save 13%. Requires a bit of forward planning but worth it for the savings.:money:

You also get discounts at Boots, Argos and Sainsburys.
Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......
  • Well after much deliberation I went for the TOSHIBA A100-147 Intel Core Duo T2050 Processor 1.6GHz for £450. It does look to be a very good spec and from a well regarded manufacturer.

Many of the 10% codes came up as expired but I eventually got EMAIL10 to work.
  • Anyone got any idea where I can get a MacBook Core 2 Duo from cheaper than the Apple site?

    Thanks!
