I was still playing with Barbies and Lego at 8 O_O

As JD said, does she really NEED a laptop? Do you already have a family computer/laptop that she could use? If you really want to get her one, is she careful and does she understand the value of things? I know some 8 year olds do not understand that laptops are expensive and need to be looked after carefully! You could get a secondhand or refurbished one - I have seen basic laptops in my local computer shop for £150 or so - they're basic but can do the essentials. I expect you could upgrade them if she's likely to want to play something like The Sims.

On the pink front, you could get a "decal" or sticker to put on the top.

I assume the laptop wouldn't be taken out the house, as well?

Does anyone have any advice? I need a laptop to take with me to Canada. I'm going for a year, so it will probably end up being like a desktop replacement. I really would like it to have a CD/DVD drive so I can watch films or play music. However I am worried about carrying something too big and paying too much - I don't know if it's more worth the money to just get a small notebook type, although then I won't have the CD option.

I'm looking at the Dell Inspiron - is this good value for money?

Each to his own but I can't believe the poster is serious about buying a £300 laptop for an 8 year old

I don't think you are ever too young to start learning how to use a computer and not to mention all the other ways you can use it to learn things, you just need to be a little careful thats all.

Much better than sticking them in front of the television.
