Obvious to some but hasn't been mentioned yet:

Don't bother with those chains that are designed to only allow the door to be opened a few inches- one kick will have them off. Better with a peephole viewer or cctv camera..... if you aren't prepared to talk to me through the door then I'm not interested.

Be cautious of uPVC doors. I've discovered that many of them have only foam or medium density fibreboard in between the outer layers of uPVC. The central panel is held in place by plastic clips around the edge of the centre panel. This makes the strong multipoint locking a bit pointless, as it wouldn't be too hard to kick out the centre of the door.

    Edited to add:

Considering that you've suffered multiple attacks, including use of a gun, I'd suggest some heavy-duty security. Start with a good strong fence around the perimiter, say an 8 ft high railing. Passers by and neighbours should be able to see through the fence so burglars can't use it for cover. Have an intercom at the gate to vet callers.

You seccond line of defence should be a strong front door and back door, windows with prickly bushes under them, etc.

Your last line of defence should be a strong door/gate controlling access to the upstairs/sleeping area. Keep your mobile by the bed at night in case your phone line is tampered with.
