Braces

Well I'm getting braces.
I'm lucky enough to have a large dentist's surgery near me that has it's own Orthodontist and I've just had the bottom brace fitted which has me in total agony. The top one is due soon after wearing a removable one for a period, and I had the impression taken for it today and it was one of the most hideous and unpleasant things I've ever experienced in a long time, it was only in for 30 seconds, but it was absolutely horrendous. I kept gagging every few seconds which led to my eyes watering, and there was so much clay it felt like it was suffocating me. It didn't help that it was a special chair where my head wasn't just tipped back but totally horizontal.
Christ it was hideous!:mad: People keep saying the pain of the braces is the worst thing but I would honestly have another week of pain than another one of them. :embarasse:cry: I'm usually a little ratty in this forum anyway, but give me a little leeway.
Aside from this, I'm not looking forward to 2 years of picking out bits of food from them.

I know how you feel - I wore fixed braces for two years - had them taken off two years ago now - I hate getting the impressions too - it feels like you can't breathe!
It will be worth it in the end though - my teeth are great now!0 -

Thanks LiBAD, I am looking forward to that time - though once they're done they'll probably then need a good whitening to get them to 'picture smile' quality.Male.

I know how you feel too! I had fixed braces for about three years. They hurt so much when you first get them on, and also when they're being tightened - but in between you'll get used to them, honest. When you get them off your teeth feel so smooth, it's really odd!
The bits of food are annoying! Have you got one of those pointy toothbrushes?Sealed Pot Challenge Number 1225

Forgot about the bits of food! Cheesy Wotsits are a nightmare and so are Pizzas!0 -
The impressions make a lot of people gag, me included. I found by looking and focussing on something (for me it was a particular brick in a building out the window) made me stay calm. Glad it is a thing of the past. However, my kept moving after my brace was removed, meaning I have a permanent retainer which is a wire at the back of my top front 6 teeth which is will be going to the grave with me! That's the worst part...0

I have a friend who has them who said the same thing, she unfortunately had them during school so had a lot worse time than I will. Yep I've got the brushes, they told me to buy a pack of 10 "Te-Pe's" from the desk. I felt 5 again.Lifeisbutadream wrote: »Forgot about the bits of food! Cheesy Wotsits are a nightmare and so are Pizzas!

I forgot to mention it actually, the Orthodontist told me some leg things to do, lift that leg foot, lift that foot, both down, both up etc (I know, I know) so I guess he's used to it. It did seem to help but every few seconds without knowing it or it being provoked I just heaved really badly.
That wire sounds nice, at least you can look forward to falsies maybe?Do you get used to it?

Lol no need for false teeth at the moment. Teeth are fine, just my problem was I ran into the door as a kid which made my teeth go black and rearranged them significantly. Strange thing is, I still remember doing it despite it happening when I was 3 or 4.
I used to hate it when I got it at first. But you forget about it and just feels normal now. It is a pain when I have to cut up an apple rather than bite in, and have to be carefull eating crusty bread (like a brace). It's mostly a pain when a tooth becomes detached, and you have to go to the dentist to have it reglued on (and pay for the privilige).
Edit: Maybe I should have rephrased that as the wire becoming detached from the tooth! lol0 -
Sounds nasty, the reason mine are in this state is because I still had baby teeth at age 16 so the proper ones were being crammed in around them. I think I get what you mean about when they're removed - boy am I looking forward to it! :jOMG when they did the mold i felt i couldnt breathe it was horrible!! the guy just kept saying to me if we take it out we only have to do it again i was thinking your really not helping haha.

Well mine was at least a little more understanding, he didn't say anything like that and seemed a bit sympathetic to the fact that I felt like I was going to die. I tried looking up causes online and one suggestion was anxiety and fear of being there, my Gran is totally scared of Dentists full stop but I'm totally fine with visiting normally. Muat be a Physical thing.
They make it look so easy. Watching that when she puts it in makes me feel sick, the guy in that vid is sitting up right I think so I suppose that helps.Male.
