Testing RAM

I've just purchased some Kingston RAM (256Mb) second-hand from ebay. All seems ok and my RAM has increased by 256Mb on my computer screen. Is this sufficient to confirm that everything is ok or is there any other checks I can do please? Thanks.

p.s. It's running on Windows 98SE if this helps.

I concur with this... the program is called memtest86 . If it is not on this site then google for it.

What you do is burn the program to a CD(make it bootable in your bios) or write it to a bootable floppy.

It then runs on startup so is independent of the OS you use.

I found it handy in checking the stability of my memory timing settings in the BIOS. Handy for tweakers out there.

Will spot bad memory very quickly.

B4 you discard your ram as faulty lower the memory timings and increase your dimm voltage in 0.1V steps (This may solve a "bad" memory problem). If the computer is important ie used for writing PhDs etc or tracking money or for business use then I would just use "default" settings and run memtest86. If anything fails replace the offending DIMM module.
