My washing machine is a unbranded one and the shortest cycle i can get it on lasts 2 hours, so looking to buy a new one - looking for something that is energy efficient, quietish, and has a timer on so I can have washes done at certain times.

Can anyone recommend one? Wont spend more then £350 on it mind. :T

Thanks

A short cycle does not mean that it is not energy efficient.

In fact the trend on the more efficient machines is for longer cycles.

Have you tried using a machine on on a plug in timer?

I recently bought a Hoover 1600 spin speed from Currys. They had a special offer around £350 for a 1400 too. Mine has a 15 minute or 44 minute wash. The 1400 had a 25 minute wash. Most machines now come with a timer. I have to say mine is quiet too. What I like about mine is I can also do a cold wash if I want ( haven't tried it yet though).

Might sound dim here - but in what instance would you want a cold wash?

Don't think you need spend more than £200 for a washing machine. Go to Pricerunner, then the company they name, then see if you can do it thru Quidco.
The cheapest Beko does cold wash and all the normal programmes including quick 30minute.

Cheap make if you dont use it often, if you use it everyday (family of 4+ or have a baby etc) might want to spend extra on a decent brand that wont break down.

I myself have a Beko (WMA510 model) with these programmes, I mainly use the Synthetic 30deg option as its a proper cycle of 2 hours ish which includes a decent wash time, 3 rinses and a proper spin, and the manual states it only uses 0.45kWh or something like that :) It cost me £165 from Coop Electrical

Same model is £190 in Argos, and if it breaks down after 2 years just buy another one :)

Totally agree with the post above.

Most people completely over-estimate how much electricity a washing machine uses.

My machine uses ether 0.4kWh or 0.6kWh on most cycles.

I have a 20 year old machine in an annex that doesn't use much more, but I suspect uses a lot more water. It's spin speed is much slower as well.

I also believe that few people use more than 3 or 4 different cycles. There doesn't seem much point in have complicated machines with scores of combinations for every fabric known to man.

Certainly a high spin speed is a plus point.

  • A washing machine engineer told me, particularly with the Bekos, that you get aesthetically identical machines that have 1000/1200/1400/1600RPM spin speeds. He said they are also pretty much the same inside, and that the components in the 1600 spinner will obviously fail a hell of a lot quicker than the 1000spin, so in the long term you are better going for the slower spinner (and its cheaper as well) and just sticking it on an extra spin cycle after its finished if you feel its required :)

Agreed, my cold fill Bosch can use up to 1.9kWh. That is for a full load on a heavily soiled 90C 'whites' wash. Much like my Gran used to 'boil' the whites.

However that is very rarely(if ever) used these day - simply not required with modern washing powder and we rarely use more than the 0.6kWh cycle.

Always have my wash on 30C but i only know how to use 1 setting on my washing machine as its unbranded. The other settings i try stop at somepoint and require me to click something else on, and no matter what the clothes come out dripping wet.
