Do I need to get BT to remove an old white, oval GPO plastic point?

Hi there

Looking for some advice. I have an old white/cream oval plastic box on my inside window frame. It looks like the black wire from the phone socket point near the floor goes up the inside of the wall, possibly connects into this white box and then possibly another cable feeds out the wall to the BT pole?

Does anyone know if this is how these work and if I need to get BT in to repair it and how much it would cost?

Looking to get new windows.

Thanks
Fluff

  • This is just a connector, one cable probably goes outside the house, the other to the master socket inside youre house. As long as youre phone works ok, the connector is fine.
Best to advise the window fitters that the box is there when they come to fit the windows, so they can work around it.

If it's the same or similar then yes, you'll need BT to remove or relocate it.anything from the NTE5 is BT's responsibility & it's illigal to interear with it.
    Here's BT's price list:

Deary, deary me. This is an old white/cream oval piece of plastic which is being asked about, not the intricate details of a BT account or an involved billing issue. If everyone in this forum replied in a similar fashion to you we'd very soon have everything behind closed doors.

The information in your PM might be spot on. Who knows? It is not open to scrutiny like the informative posts before yours.

Actually, it's a junction box which is the property of the General Post Office!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Was that the information given to jenniferfluff29 in the PM, I wonder? Perhaps the GPO want it back to refurbish in a more fetching colour!

It's BT now - who still use these boxes (or later variants) to switch from external dropwitre to internal cable - it remains a necessary part of the BT installation, irrespective of whether it claims GPO or PoT.

It had no link, It was not to long and I have no idea why.
  • Hi guys,

Spike7451 - that is the box that I have.

I have checked where the BT line runs to. It looks like there has been a new line in (I think) at some point and it comes straight in at the bottom of the house behind the white BT box that I plug my phone into. The GPO oval box is further up the window and therefore not a link between the inside point and the outside line. I am therefore going to remove the GPO point and just leave the wire in situ for the window guys to cover over with the new window cills. Not sure if the wire from the GPO oval box is still connected in some way to the BT white box at the bottom of the wall.

For info, the message that I got from the BT rep was to offer me a new white BT phone point for £195. Thank god I do not need one of these.

Thanks for all your help guys.
