Any tips on the best places to start looking? Not really fussed where we end up, ideally somewhere relatively warm (and ideally not Greece).

Would we be better booking right at the last minute if we're not particularly choosy on destination?

Budget doees NOT include spending money etc, that's separate

tbh, the latter half of your dates are half term week - so might be tricky to get a cheap deal. 31 October is the end of season for many hotels and resorts as well. You'd be better looking for something slightly earlier (or maybe later) to get a cheap deal

So best chance I guess is to try to depart on 19th, or even 18th, to avoid HT crossover?

You can go to canaries eg gran canaria which should still be sunbathing weather for 260 ish each from gatwick or 299 ish from manchester depnds wher u r in uk. thomascook.com website

Seeing things like a week in Mexico for £450 on teletextholidays.co.uk - are these too good to be true?

Try and book more than 2 weeks in advance if its a package as under 2 weeks you have to pay ticket on departure charges of £15pp, unless of course its alot cheaper for last minute.
