Reclaiming road tax on scrapped car

Yesterday my OH finally picked up his new Skoda Fabia which he bought under the scrappage scheme. When he handed over all the docs for the old car, he gave the dealer the entire log book.

On the form you fill in to reclaim unused months tax, it says you can only claim if you have already told the DVLA that you have sold/transferred/scrapped the car. Now, obviously my OH has not scrapped the car himself, but should he have completed the bit of the log book to notify the DVLA that he had sold(?) the car to the dealer??

Not sure how this should work under the scrappage scheme and whether there is likely to be a problem reclaiming the tax because he did not fill in the relevant portion of the logbook and send it to DVLA?

When I picked up my new car under the scrappage scheme I asked about reclaiming the road tax there and then. The dealer filled in the paperwork for me and even put it in a correctly addressed envelope for me to send away. My refund came through a few weeks later.

Try phoning the dealer to see if the paperwork is still there and can it be filled in for you to send away. There's no harm in asking

Get your OH to write a letter giving his details, car details (including registration mark!), date of sale and dealer's details, and state he gave full logbook to dealer in error. This will remove him as keeper from record rather than the logbook. Send it stapled to the refund form (V14).

Hopefully the dealer will send in correct part of logbook for him but do this just in case, and you don't want to lose out on refund.

It will take anything between 3 and 6 weeks for the refund. The sale has to be processed first, then the refund.

You can download a 1 page form from the dvla website, fill it in, stick on the old tax disc and post!

It's the V14 you need. HTH

Morag, I'm sure you would agree that its best to read a form before sending it off.

On the V14 form it states...
If you do not have the V5C, please write to us at
DVLA, Swansea SA99 1BD. Give us the vehicle registration number,
the date you sold, transferred or exported the vehicle, your name
and the name of the person or company you sold or transferred the
    vehicle to.
Which is pretty much what flutterbyuk25 said in the post above yours.

    From the Berr site
Does the dealer need to keep the tax disc when I trade in my old vehicle?

No, the tax disc should be returned to you so that you can claim a refund if appropriate. To get a refund you’ll need to complete a V14 ‘Application for a refund of vehicle tax’. Send the form and the tax disc to Refund Section, DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AL.

    http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/sectors/automotive/scrappage/FAQs/page51710.html#Documents

The dealer notifies the DVLA that the vehicle is scrapped. This form is all that is needed for a refund. Read the instructions again. My son received his tax refund by filling in this form and enclosing the tax disc - no other paperwork was needed.

You are only entitled to a refund if:
you are the previous registered keeper of the vehicle
and you have recently sold or transferred it.
    or
you are the current registered keeper, and you have told DVLA
why you are no longer keeping the vehicle taxed. That means
    we have been told that:
    – the vehicle has been either scrapped, exported, stolen, sold,
    transferred, or

Morag, from the document you cite...
What documents should the dealer keep?

The dealer should retain the V5C and the MOT Test Certificate when the old vehicle is handed to the dealer for scrapping. (If the old vehicle is to be collected from your house by the Authorised Treatment Facility scrapping the vehicle, the dealer should take a copy of the V5C and the MOT Test Certificate). When you do this, you should complete Section 9 of the V5C and return it to the DVLA. The dealer may wish to take copies of the other documents.
It clearly states here that "you should complete Section 9 of the V5C and return it to the DVLA."

Unfortunately the OP didn't do that, and it is to that slightly different situation that the OP is trying to get an answer.

A side issue, but after buying a new car that was taxed yesterday I got the form to reclaim the tax on my old car (trade-in) that was taxed until the end of december - on reading the small print DVLA state that you can only claim back full months so I will only receive 2 months opposed to 3 months refund.
Now this only equates to about £15 but I am really angry that I am now technically paying road tax for october twice....they are happy to make me pay a full month when I buy the tax mid month!!
Has anyone else had this problem - have i read the small print correctly?

If you were using your old car til yesterday then you have used October's tax.

You could have sent tax back at end of September, keep car of road til yesterday then had it transported to dealers. But you chose not to.

It is correct that you only get full remaining months back as a refund.

I appreciate what you are saying but I think you have missed the point I was trying to make - due to DVLA policy I am paying a full months car tax for October for my old car which I used for 6 days and a full months tax for my new car which I am using from 7th Oct onwards.
My gripe is not about paying the tax but the fact that DVLA are making extra money at car owners expense. Surely you cannot agree that it is fair that in 6 days I "have used October's tax " as you say, especially when my new car is taxed the next day at full price.

When you apply for a refund of road tax, you only get a refund on full months.

Since when has tax been fair?
