how do I de-activate 1571??

A few years ago, when BT introduced their 'free' service 1571, I used to have a code to de-activate it....a series of ## and *** plus the figures 1571. Over the years, this code has got lost, and I can't remember what it is! I am now with Tiscali (although it's still a BT line) but BT won't talk to me as I'm no longer a customer with them!! All I want is the code to input on my phone, as I now have an answer machine, (fed up of hurtling for the phone when it rings, because it goes to 1571 after 4 rings!! )
Anyway, does anyone have/remember the code I need? I know, on BT website, it says you need to phone them up..... but I think that is for the 'paid for' service.

Thanks in advance :)

Whoever you pay line rental to will be your 1571 provider.

If that was BT, you could have cancelled by filling in their online form HERE but, as it's Tiscali, you need to speak to them.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I now pay Tiscali (even though it's a BT line).... but, the 1571 I am referring to can't be cancelled online......I have looked on Tiscali site, and there are provisions to cancel the PAID for 1571, but not for the FREE 1571 (which is the one I have).....The one I have is the basic 1571, which cannot be personalised, .... All I can remember, from when I originally started using it, is that there was a code, I could use with my phone handset, to input the code to deactivate it at any time.
I am very reluctant to get in touch with Tiscali, regarding this. I fear what they might remove if I ask them to deactivate it!!

If you pay your line rental to Tiscali its a Tiscali Line and has nowt to do with BT as you dont have an account with them, so your have to call Tiscali on their expensive customer service number to ask them turn off basic 1571 for you.

If it was still with BT you would have had to ask BT to remove it,and then reinstate when and if required. They do not give you a code to switch the basic service on and off yourself.
