Hi folks..could do with some expert help (again :) )

Have connected my macbook's corrupted hard drive to a caddy which I am plugging into my usb..

Problem is usb is not being detected by any pc (have tried on a few!) so I cant begin to try and extract any data.

I know the caddy definitely works as I have connected other hard drives with it, which work!

So my question is: What can I use/do to extract any kind of data from my corrupted data without sending it away for recover?

Many thanks

  • Not sure if you can, by default the pc won't recognise any mac hd due to the format differences (probably read it as either blank or unreadable).

It wont work on windows as the file format is unreadable by windows.. there is a format that can be read by both... But for now I suggest finding to find a mac and use some software to recover what files you can.

Thanks guys. Tried with a mac this morning BUT no go. Mac does not detect, though the caddy light is on (indicating caddy is working).

    Other suggestions please. Thank you

Are any of the pins on the connectors of the caddy damaged/bent? DD.s one had this problem but had a missing pin on the cable to the caddy/hd enclosure.

    TestDisk, free from CGSecurity: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

It's cross platform )Mac, Windows and other versions available) and can detect Mac drives from Windows (I believe), best to run from a Mac as you'll have more luck in recovery, it's very powerful so read the instructions.

Isofa..many many thanks for that..I have been running a search on my corrupt disk which it actually detected..picks up lots of stuff and puts into different folders which is hard to go through when I had soo many pics and music..so far about 200 folders and its not even through 1/3 of the drive.

So is there a way I can browse the remaining file structure in the corrupted drive. This way I know where to go directly for my pics, music and documents and will save searching the whole drive and creating hundreds of folders.

    Many thanks again

Chances is that you will have to scan the whole drive then pick out what you want to keep. Can be a long process but it's preferable to losing valuable data.

P.S. - didn't know about that program (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk), will have to hang on to that one for future reference :)
  • You can try out the data recovery software to recover your corrupted data from Mac hard drive.Stellar Phoenix Macintosh data recovery software is very easy to use and provides complete solution.Software supports HFS,HFSX ,HFS Wrapper and FAT file system volume.
