Foreign holidays for a month or more?

Hi there, this is my first post and my wife and I were wondering how you find out about all these "extended" holidays in comfortable hotels for a month or more. We had heard that some firms like to keep their hotels full during October and November and offer discounts to the over 50's to stay long term. It seems as cheap to live in the sun as it does here during the winter...any tips?

If staying same hotel for 4 weeks or more- make sure you research it well before you book

Its one thing being in a rough hotel for 7 days, but a month.

The main tour operators winter brochures have "long stay" holidays in them, anything from 28 to 90 (yes ninety) days.
Also if you get the Thomson wintersun brochures quite a few hotels offer 7,14,21,28 nights.
Go to your travel agent and ask for all the brochures with long stay holidays.
Read between the lines and have a look at these sites to see if your chosen hotel or apartment is mentioned.

A lot of the long stay adverts in the papers are for Malta

People seem to have varying thoughts of the place, and of certain hotels

I think the Island is OK, but some of the hotels ( as featured on watchdog!) are IMHO the pits.

( won't mention any names here- the owners have a habit of threatening legal action)

I would suggest don't book for a long stay there if you have never been to the island before, and if don't know the hotel in question.

Off to Spain 4th Jan 05 for 28 days thru SAGA.
4 star hotel, half board, entertainment , excursions etc etc. Daytime flights from Gatwick £750 ish each. Got £50 each off as we already have annual insurance so did not need theirs.
Could spend that amount in a month at home in the cold.......

I would recommend an apartment for a long stay holiday as a hotel room can be very limiting in space. Also the food in the hotel may not be that great and there are usually lots of restaurants locally. It is a number of years since I did this so any apartment recommendations will be out of date

Longstay Holidays are plentifull just type in 'longstay' in Google...
have stayed in Malta at times, as you say, a mixed bunch of hotels there but in Sliema, they have a 'winter house party' hotel, will look it up for you..right on the front and was excellent..were 68 and 70 years old and like our comfort :) also Hotel Topaz and the Santana were very good too...we have also found an excellent travel Insurence firm..started of Insuring our home , (Live in a park Home ) and saved £89 on last years cost..they are VERY efficiant, as prooved by a neighbours claiming within weeks of changing to them when recommended by us..their travel Insurence is amazing..we have just booked an annual policy for £80!!! Yes..other wanted £300+ and its a comprehensive cover too.£80 covers up to age 75 plus spouse and up to 3 children..Over 75 is £165..but still great value Im sure youll agree. The Insurers we use are MICA or contact info@lifesure.co.uk. were very very pleased with this service..hope it helps a few of you travels :)

cont: http://www.holidaysuncovered.co.uk/ I use this site to get reviews on Hotels anywhere, very helpfull.

  • Have you considered home exchanging? We have been doing this for about 10 years, holidays from 1 week through to 1 month in Florida, Hawaii, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, etc ……. Can recommend Homelink.org but there are several companies that run these schemes. Costs about 90GBP a year to be included in their database/books. So all it costs is your flight plus living expenses while you’re there. Often includes a car, too. We love it and have met some great people and stopped at excellent places.
