Need help with trip to Scotland
Options
We are plannning a 5 day October trip up to Scotland, and need help knowing where to go. We have been to Edinburgh a few times, but that is the extent of our forays north of the border. So, we know we would like to see Loch Lomond and Loch Ness but are really after suggestions as to where else we should see.
We would like to stay in pretty country inns, or market towns, and want to be able to fish ( with the hire of rods, and a fishing tuition) and will be travelling with a 12 year old and would welcome any other suggestions which will keep him occupied/entertained too.
Can anyone who knows Scotland well help us plan a 5 day circular trip, which will give us the essence of the place?
TIA

I'm not great at stuff like this but you could do Loch lommond onto pitlochry then up to inverness. It is roughly 90miles loch lommond to pitlochry then 80ish pitlochry to inverness. As for what to do and where to go I'm stumped. I'm sure someone else will come along with better ideas.
Here is a fishing idea for pitlochry and perthshire website which provides pitlochry tourist info.

Hi we love aviemore, there you can go quadbiking over the moors, clay pigeon shooting, go up the mountain on the mountain railway, see/feed the reindeers and see the sledgedogs too there is a outward bound type area nearby at carrbridge called landmark forrest theme park and fishing is available in many locations too and its about 40 mins from inverness.0

Loch Ness is seriously over-rated (Sorry to the locals about that)
I like Inverness, but if I was you I would be looking at, as has already been suggested, Perthshire, the Borders, (Melrose is lovely), Aviemore has lots to do.
Are you driving?
Where are you starting from.0 -
The Dunkeld (Perthshire) area could be good. It is famous for fishing - River Tay - and there are good walks, golf, clay pigeon shooting. It is also very central and you could easily get to Pitlochry, Perth, Edinburgh, Inverness, Dundee, Glasgow and a few other places either by car. bus or train.0

Thanks for the suggestions. We have tentatively put together a route! Up to Portpatrick for 1 night, then onto Loch Lomond, up past Loch ness to Aviemore for 1/2 nights, stopping en route at Oban, Inverness, and anywhere else which looks interesting. Then back down to Pitlochry for 1 night before travelling home.
Not yet booked hotels but looking at The Waterside Bistro in Portpatrick, The Black Bull near Loch Lomond, and somenthing a bit wacky called International Starters restaurant with rooms in Inverness, I cannot find the old Inn I bookmarked for Pitlochry though, so any help there would be welcome.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for accom in these areas? we like old country inns, or small family hotels, not chain type places.
Thanks again.0 -
Is it The Old Mill Inn in Pitlochry?

I've never stayed there, but had a lovely bar lunch there a couple of weeks ago0 -
Yes!! that was it, thanks so much. So, do you think it is in a good location? and is it close to the town, as we like to walk out at during the day and possibly at night and mooch around ( well, I do OH and son may not be as keen!!)0

Its just off the main street. If you go to roughly the middle of town on the main street there's Fishers hotel beside the bus stops and a bank (RBS I think) across the road from Fishers and the old mill is just behind the bank. I would say its a perfect location as its right in the centre of town.0
