opening new current account

my OH has had problems with his bank and they have confiscated his card due to "poor running of his account". He has cheques etc that he wants to pay in, but then he wont be able to use his card to pay people!
Is he better to get a new account, and if so, which bank would be best?

He can have a cheque made out in branch over the counter to pay who ever he needs to pay, also he can get a basic atm card so that he can still access his money.MFWB

i think once its hit this stage lou, he might struggle to get anything other than a basic account in any case, step accounts from Natwest are often mooted as the best basic bank acocunt. the other problem is yes, they dont tend to come with switch or delta, only cirrus or sometimes solo.
Sadly, this is par for the course with basic account from what I can tell. The other thing to note is if he tries to get other accounts elsewhere & he gets rejected, will this impact even more on his credit rating?

I am going to get him to try to open a basic bank account, so at least he has something - they said they will review his situation in 3 months and possibly allow him to have his card back - and that he has to withdraw funds when they have cleared over the counter. (slightly inconvenient!)
I try to keep our joint acc for mortgage, food, household bills etc and dont really want cheques going in and coming out etc! its hard enough to keep track of as is!!0 -

if its a joint account surely he has as much right as you to use it tho ?
i would be gutted if my other half did this to me, so i can see his point
which bank is he with? the same as the joint account?0 -

No way! What he wants to spend the money or "write cheques" from the rent & bills account? No way are you being unreasonable.
Personally, if its a case of this & that, Id cut the card up from the joint account and just have standing orders in and out of it. Then its "no ones account" you can write the numbers down from the card if you need them, but I seldom use that account, as I know what goes in and out and tend to look at it once a week at most,. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? i dont think he has a right to be upset. he has no interest in managing the household bills etc, but wants to use it as a current account just because he has abused his for years and they have had enough of it
my main problem is he wants to draw money today and then put cheques in to balance it out - and then when we go overdrawn i have to pay the charges and it has a detrimental effect on my credit rating as i have all my accounts with the same bank.
I use my joint acc card for food shopping and thats about it0
