Need to return item

Hi,
I'm quite a novice on ebay so not much knowledge of how it all works. I've bought an item that's faulty and the seller has offered a refund which I wish to take him up on. It is quite a bulky item so postage will be expensive, however the seller has said he will arange pick up. Is this OK and what do I do next? Anything in particular I need to watch out for?

The seller has been very professional and I have no reason to distrust him.

As a gesture of good faith it might be courteous of the seller to actualy refund your money prior to arranging pickup. Otherwise you would simply need to contact each other through ebay and arrange a mutualy convenient date. Even if you have no reason to suspect anything amiss I would suggest having someone else there with you when they collect the item just to be safe.

Personally I would be careful. How are you getting your refund? In cash at time of collection or by paypal when he gets back home with the item?

Once he takes the item away you have no proof he has taken it and paypal will only be interested if you send it back tracked and you can provide them with proof he has received it.

If it's a business seller then I think you've got the peachy deal here. They have offered to collect the item, that means it's at their expense. Think if you'd bought from a shop, you'd have to take it back yourself, with the receipt and all that. There's no way you'd get a refund without taking it back to the shop, so why should an eBay seller be any different? You still have all the power of eBay (and presumably PayPal) behind you if the refund is not forthcoming - seems to me the seller is doing the honourable thing here.

IF you send it back yourself you SHOULD get your delivery costs refunded (and as a business seller myself, that's what we would do for a faulty item) BUT I'd say don't push your luck, they may decide you spent more than their collection would have cost....

Not if the sellers courier (or whatever) doesn't provide a tracking number- then the OP has no item to send back in a SNAD, and no proof that they have sent it back already ;)

OP, just make sure you get a tracking number (one that you can see online) just incase it all goes pear shaped, it shouldn't, but you never know.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

What a silly idea if the seller did that and the buyer refused the pickup on the item the buyer would end up with the item and a refund. Just make sure that the courier picking up is tracking the item and ask for the details (tracking number etc) then if it had to go via a dispute you would have the evidence you need.

It sounds as if the seller is doing everything to correct the problem so I doubt they'll be any problem with it

Ask them what courier company is collecting from you. If it is their own van make sure they arrive with a duplicated collection note that you and the driver have to sign on their headed paper to show that collection has occurred and that the item was in an acceptably packaged state. You keep one he the other. If its the likes of DHL he should give u a collection sheet with the tracking number (if not ask for the tracking number) etc.

Maybe I wasn't clear when I said he'd arrange pick-up - I meant he would arrange Parcelforce to pick it up so I should be OK for a tracking number. He will refund me when he's received it.
    Thanks for all the help.
