The reason that they're so expensive at the moment, as you're finding, is that it's coming to the end of the Spanish season (ie less supply, higher prices) and the beginning of the English season (ie less supply, higher prices) - so a bit of an overlap. Give it a couple of weeks and the prices will begin to fall again.

PS I used to work in a company that grows lettuce (iceberg and then the cos/romaine and gem). OH still works there, but he's in IT so doesn't touch a lettuce unless I give it to him in a salad
