Debt free = clutter free?

Just having a ponder about my debts and thinking that I really need to get on with selling stuff on ebay... which got me thinking that this whole being in debt thing could be a good thing. WHAT?? I hear you cry...

well, already, since beginning my journey (about 4 weeks ago) I have been through all my old paperwork, getting rid of about a room full of old bills/statements (checking carefully for any bank charges of course!) and other miscellaneous rubbish! It has also forced me to close down 3 credit cards, 2 store cards and a Next account which I just "hadn't got round to" before as I want to improve my credit rating... next on the list is gathering all the stuff I no longer need/have never used to sell on ebay/amazon...(already includes make up, jewellery, TONS of books, a stereo...) I have a feeling that the house is going to be pretty empty by the end of this weekend - which is GREAT! Just lately, me and the OH have been complaining about not having enough space and stuff being everywhere and had got to talking about moving... but we live in a 3-bedroom house!!! and there's just the 2 of us - we don't NEED anymore space, we just don't need as much stuff.

So, after my very long ramble... my point is that the journey to becoming debt-free is also becoming my journey to being clutter free and I can't wait for both!

Yeah I'm starting to notice the clutter disappear. I'm using up the old before purchasing the new, which definately helps. Also selling stuff on Amazon too, clearing up my DVD, CD and Bookcases.

  • I had managed to keep about 8 years worth of bills in no sort of order (at the low point some of which i'd never even opened) and I had great fun shreading all of them (except my bank statements which are now carefully filed)! That was a great afternoon!

I really found that was the turning point and made me more organised about my debt and gave me a real boost to sort my life out. I also purged my other belongings, selling some stuff on ebay and sending other stuff to charity shops. I just kept saying to myself "do I REALLY need this".. and it worked!

    2016 - 10 years debt free!!!!
  • Totally agree with you on this one, I've got rid of loads of stuff by selling it on eBay, I have shredded a load of bills and statements from years gone by and I'm now using things up before I buy anymore.

Funny as I am now pretty much the opposite of what I was before my lightbulb moment and I like it!!

I agree too.... although I have so much stuff to sell that i've not noticed the clutter go down yet :-( Although have seen bank balance go down due to ebay profits :j:
Although did have a years worth of bills to shred last week after being away travelling.... was a nice feeling. Going to have another "Sort Out" this weekend for Car Boot Sale, hopefully will begin to notice stuff going soon!

I agree, I've sorted out so much stuff and sold some of it on ebay and I am now praying for a nice sunny day Sunday so I can do a car boot sale.

I do find myself saying 'what the hell was I thinking' at half the stuff I've come across!

But my spare room is so nice and clean!
  • Totallt agree with you all, although still ahve a long way to being clutter free. But it does feel like a weight being off your shoulders as it feel as you are more organised. My OH is more the hoarder in our household, so I have started putting thigs I think he could do without in storage boxes for a while, then a month or so later ask him to get rid. If he moans my arguement is if you didn't use it and or didn't even know where it was, whats the point in keeping it.

Ive just put some stuff up on ebay (about time) so that will clear some room.

I have loads of statements etc from the past 8 years, but they have always been in folders and stuck in a wardrobe so in that respect im pretty much the same

Also my room is tidier because i am more focused in life now

lol, since moving out of home several years ago I've never thrown away a single piece of paper (bill, letter etc) or receipt :D I have them all stashed away. It took me a few dedicated weeks to sort my 3 foot high paperwork stack lol

I didn't shred anything though lol, just filed away nicely except the receipts which live in no order in a huge container. Some of the receipts are for a grand here and a grand there. Sickens me but I can't bring to dispose of them :-\

I was just surprised to find I wasn't the only paperwork obsessive compulsive :rotfl: Respect :)

Ohh Amos..steady on! Is that the first proposal on site I wonder!!
I totally agree with all of the above; since lighbulb moment have had great fun selling stuff & clearing clutter (masses to go stil though!) and feel quite liberated by getting rid of it all! Added bonus is credit cards getting paid off sooner, postman kept in a job and I made a blokes day (behave!) when he discovered that I really WAS selling old Sky box & dish for £20!! He's got to get the dish down though...scared of heights moi!
