Check your credit file first to see if they have reported a missed payment. Quite a few lenders don't report this unless it's a common occurrence. Also, I wouldn't write to them to set up a direct debit. It can easily be done over the phone and sometimes online.0

Unless and until you see something along the lines of 'the sum of £xx.xx will be requested from your bank by direct debit on dd/mm/yy' on your credit card statement, you should assume that the DD hasn't been set up and make alternative arrangements to pay.0

Card companies are among those most likely to report late payments to the credit reporting agencies, where it will reflect against your credit record. Late and missed payments on your credit record can affect your ability to get credit in the future. In many cases, if you are offered credit in the future, either as a loan or through a card issuer, you'll pay higher interest rates than those who have never had a late payment. Your late payments lower your credit score, which can affect you with anyone who is entitled to do a credit check on you0

.......................however one late payment has a very negliable effect. Not all companies report late payments, but most report missed payments.0

Do NOT check your credit file -what a load of nonsense. Gawd, we'll all be checking it daily at this rate.
If you have failed to pay then that's your fault for not checking. Always a good idea to check and maintain your own finances. Once the DD is set up (and they take a payment) should they then fail to take money then that wouldn't be your fault.
I'm going for the bus in 20mins and I'm wondering if I should check my credit file before or after? I'll be worrying all day if I don't check before although I'm thinking about getting mobile broadband and then I can check my credit file on the bus on the way to work and on the way back. Just in case.0
