Any suggestions for voluntary work?

Options
Hi everyone, I'd like to start doing some voluntary work and just trying to come up with some ideas of what I could do to help a charity out.

I run my own successful consulting firm (IT, although I'm not a techie), and would like to try to use some of my professional experience to help people, but a bit stumped as to how I could go about this?

Unfortunately because of my job I would find it hard to commit to working the same hours every week long term (if a client needs me to do something at the last minute then I have to do it regardless of prior commitments really) - are there any voluntary roles out there which can be done on a more ad hoc basis?

Thanks for reading

there are loads of voluntary groups out there who would love some IT help. Go to your local Volunteer Centre, tell them what you can offer and they will mail round their members asking who needs your help.

    Get in touch with

    www.it4communities.org.uk

    >> iT4Communities. We are the UK's leading national IT volunteering programme. Our main areas of activity are:
    • Helping charities and community/voluntary groups to find volunteers to help with their IT needs
    • Helping IT professionals to find suitable IT volunteering opportunities
    • Providing support for volunteering projects from project definition to project completion
  • NTJ;

    Check out http://www.charitychoice.co.uk/searchresult.asp.

It is really good for pin pointing charities near by & by category, ie, help the aged, animals etc, etc.

    Bests.
  • Thanks very much for the suggestions, am looking at both the sites now!

Maybe try out some of these websites, which give you volunteering suggestions and actions when you want to do them:

http://www.helpfromhome.org/ - micro volunteering in your pyjamas
http://www.charityguide.org/ - volunteering on demand, when you want to do it
http://www.beextra.org/ - volunteering on the go or in your own home
  • Not really sure what consulting firms do, so may have got the wrong end of the stick, but are you skilled in creating websites? I'm sure tonnes of charities could do with their websites being updated.
