Thanks Rosie, I think I'll just use it up in a cake or make scones. And buy block marg in future. I'm interested in the vegetarian Trexx as I'm trying to use fewer animal products. Off to google it now!
Cookeen is a white vegetable fat suitable for pastry, available in tescos and other supermarkets I imagine.

As an aside I use tescos Soft Spread (not value) for all my baking cakes and pastry and never have any problems.
I do alot of cooking for teashops and my local country market and never have anything but compliments about my cakes, cookies, quiches, tarts, sweets etc.
Especially at the country market where we try to keep prices down it has to be used, not sure if anyone would buy anything if it was made with butter it would be too expensive.

Oh thanks Angela, I remember Cookeen, my Mum used to use it. I seem to remember my Home Ec teacher saying that it gives a nice short texture. I'll have to do a lot of baking to try the different options.:D

Incidentally, I looked up Vitalite and it seems it's not vegan as the D3 comes from lanolin (sheep's wool). But they're meant to be working on making it vegan-friendly.

Anyway, I'm glad you've reminded me of the different options. I'm going to pay more attention to labels when I'm buying.

I'm guessing that Tesco's own brand is cheaper - I've never used it but it sounds like it does the job just scrummily! I'm pretty thrifty in general and a careful shopper. So I'm surprised I bought the Stork out of habit/familiarity with a brand name. I think I assumed it was cheap. Silly of me. I'll be shopping a lot more carefully next time!

P.S. I wish I lived near you so I could buy your baking. Wouldn't be very MS but it sounds gorgeous!

Thanks a million for the link, I'll be giving those a try tomorrow I think :D

Be prepared to make them often, once you start you can't stop, my family go crackers for these.

Have used tub stork fine with them, although most got eat before they had cooled - but no complaints from my lot.

Well Bronnie - thanks for clearing up that mystery! It's back to the block for me. Butter is my favourite but it's too dear to use it all the time. I always use butter for spreading and sometimes for baking.

true its a bit dearer but tescos cheapest is 64p for a block and it makes nice cakes .Sometimes I will do half and half when making a sponge cake

When I have used tub Stork in flapjacks they are much softer than those I make with butter.

Thanks Jackie, I must price it over here (in Euro) but I bet it's cheaper than the brand. Great idea with the half and half. I think I feel a baking (and eating) session coming on. :D

Just wanted to put in two cents' worth to say that Vitalite is not vegan (though supposedly they're working on it). Google "Vitalite vegan" and you find this discussion all over the web. :)

ETA: Oops. Just saw the earlier post about D3.
