Scotland in early Dec?

We've got a week off work at the beginning of Dec and are thinking of driving round a bit of Scotland. We're not bothered about any of the cities, and wondered if anyone had suggestions as to where we could go? We're a tad concerned that lots of attractions will be closed because of the time of year - any suggestions welcomed!

nope - we're pretty open to suggestions. Have car will travel!!
  • You dont say where you are travelling from but I would recommend heading to the West coast to Argyll, the Isles, Loch Lomond, Stirling and Trossachs areas. If you go to visitscotlsnd.com and at bottom of page click on regions you can access loads of info. Good food and cosy wee local bars all over this area and reasponable B & B or hotel accom if you are wanting to tour around.

Can't really argue with Rayman2112's suggestions (are you a fellow Rush fan by any chance?). But might add that a wee run around the east Neuk of Fife might offer some contrast: Elie, Crail, Anstruther etc and eventually of course St Andrews which is quite pleasant outside tourist season. You could then head off via Perthshire to Rayman2112's suggested route (via The Temples of Syrinx of course!)
  • good suggestions above but I would also suggest if you want to go a wee bit further north, the drive to Plockton is spectacular.....you may remember it from Hamish McBeth. I only discovered it failry recently and its one of my fav.....

and of course the drive through Glencoe.....with Runrig playing loudly on the CD :D

Anywhere on the west coast of Scotland will be spectacular at any time of year. I don't know but I would think there will be snow on some of the peaks around there.

You could do worse than what we did this summer which was base in Fort William then drive out to Mull, Ardnamurchan and Skye.

I think the only problem you might find is that of course it's going to get dark much quicker as many journies in that part of Scotland take a while, even if it isn't that far in miles. And you'd have to check the ferry timetables as they often run less in the winter.

all great advice - thanks!! Will hit the web and see what I can find.
  • Visit North Berwick east coast town with Scottish Sea Bird Centre open all year, beautifull beaches even in winter. Then stroll along to Tea At Tiffanys for great home made soup & scones (truely scrummy). Tantallon Castle, Dirleton Castle & Edinburgh Castle all near by.
