ipod and quicktime hell

I am hoping some tech wizard on here can help before I pull out what little hair I have left. I bought an ipod 30gb for wifeys birthday and cannot get the stand alone version of quictime 7 to install.
error 1402 could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\UINSTALL\QUICKTIME
verify that you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personel.
I have done all I can think of:
removed quicktime via add and remove and then did a search and deleted all traces of previous versions. I have tried to install a stand alone version and have checked the quicktime cdda key for permissions and have enabled full control for everyone, which it shows. I have followed all the advice on the apple discussion forums but no success. Do I have to use quicktime with the ipod? I am also close to reaching the 14 day cut off period before I can return it so need help desperately or should I quit and buy the sony mp3 at tescos for £99.97

Why not remove Quicktime and Itunes completely and install the bundled pack.

I use Quicktime alternative http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm0 -

You don't have to use itunes unless you actually want to buy tracks from them!
There are various better free alternative programs like YamiPod, which will also work on other older OS's i.e. does not need XP.
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
You would have to use Quick time if you are also using videos on your iPod.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0
