Oil lamps, are they safe?

I am keen to reduce my electricity bill this winter, yet I dont fancy sitting in the dark, and although candles are lovely, they make a right mess when they melt and aren't that cheap really. So, I was cosidering an oil lamp in the lounge, like the old fashioned victorian ones, as they give out a heck of a lot of light, but I was wondering, has anyone got experience of them as in are they safe? do they create odour or condensation and how long does the oil last so how efficient are they in comparison to electric light? Thanks.

an energy efficient bulb will cost next to nothing to run per hour. just have a low wattage bulb on? probably cheaper than the oil and messing about.
i wouldnt bother with an oil lamp, far too dangerous - massive fire risk, and not worth the hassle imo.
you do get an odour with them, as your obviously burning oil.
