Putting Cat Flap Through Thick Wall

My OH has decided she wants a cat and has tasked me with putting a cat flap somewhere so it can get in and out of the house. The trouble is we have a conservatory at the back of the house so there is no conventional door I can put a hole in. Looks like I am going to have to punch a hole though the conservatory wall which is quite thick.
Has anyone done this sort of thinig before? Whats the best way to make a hole that big through a fairly thick wall?

the neighbours have a cat flap fitted into a upvc panel on their conservatory, do you have any panels or is it just dwarf walls and french doors?
also you can get round cat flaps for glass / glazed units. if you have french doors? maybe easier getting a glazier to cut the holes than to chop out of a brick wall?

Its just dwarf walls with french doors. I looked briefly at trying to go through the glass in the door but I am a bit concerned the seal wont be that good and condensation could get inbetween the double glasing. Have you any ideas how much it might cost to go through the glass?0 -

My dad has done this in his conservatory dwarf wall - easy job, combination of angle grinder and, as stated, bolster and hammer. If you are careful it shouldn't even harm the interior decoration as the cat flap frame will cover any slight ragged edge. IMO it's a lot easier than cutting through and re sealing a DG unit.

We did this in our old house and again in the new house but this time put a flap at both ends of the tunnel to reduce draughts. 2 cheap staywell basic flaps for about £7 each at Argos , plus shuttering plywood for the tunnel. The old one lasted over 10 years.
Having double flaps took the cats a while to get used to, but now work very well.0 -
You could try hiring one of these - http://www.hss.com/g/1121/240v.html builders use them for putting vent holes through walls. The 152mm one is about 6inches which should be big enough as it'll be as big as the cat flap hole if not bigger. If your cat is slim you might get away with the 127mm. You'll need to line the hole but it might be possible to adapt some ducting.Adventure before Dementia!0

Hello,
Based on my own experience with Colin Darrall of catflapfitter.co.uk, I would advise people not to contact him – after taking a deposit for fitting a new cat flap, he never showed up to do the work, rarely answered his phone, would not return my calls. A bit of googling suggests I’m not the only person who’s had a very bad experience with Colin Darrall0 -
