Hi Guys

I just got the punto N reg 1996 and it is having following problem

When you push on the throttle, it doesnt always accelerate immediately and the gearstick can be a little stiff. Other than this, it drives really well. It has been and can be driven.

Can any one suggest what could be the problem ? does it need gear box change or some sensor problem?

Can any one suggest who can fix it easily and cheaply ? any ideas?

thanks in advance
Pats

have you owned an automatic before more to the point a fiat auto.

the fiat system is very different to any other auto in that it doesnt change gear, most autos are 3 or 4 speed, the fiat is a CVT (constantly variable transmition) so when you accelerate its a constant smooth proccess thats why it feels like its slow to respond.

i presume you know that in order to move the gearlever from PARK you must first hold the foot brake ON.

BTW im not trying to shock you but IF this powder clutch CVT goes wrong it WILL cost a lot...3.5k for a new gearbox. i know this because i was a fiat/alfa/lancia specialist and ive changed one.

    Hi JBSplit

To get more information about this problem can you please explain what do I need to do? should I go to Fiat dealer and ask him? or is there any other way I can fix it? should I show it to private garage man?

    Thanks in advance

there are some specialists that deal with automatic transmitions

goto google and put in automatic gearbox specialists.

but in the first instance i would get a local mechanic to have a drive in it.

BEWARE the main fiat dealer they will NOT repair it, they will only replace the whole unit. by all means get a main dealer to road test it and maybe run a diagnostic test (£30-50) if they know exactly whats wrong with it then fine it may be a simplt repair(external) but main dealers favour a unit replacement rather than a strip down and repair.

Get a specialist to have a look, but to be honest if it needs work then you may as well cut your losses and throw it in the bin. a 96 Punto is probably worth next to nothing

Midland Fiat in Dudley, Birmingham do a powder clutch / torque convertor supplied and fitted while you wait for £275! Thats a recon one too, not a unknown secondhand one!
