Residential complex PCN

My flatmate today received a PCN for parking in an allocated bay in flat complex from New Generation Parking.
We live in a complex of flats with not enough allocated visitors' spaces, and as we have 2 cars, we have been using another space (I know, not our own) because we noticed that another one never had a car in it. We presumed that if someone did come to use the space, they would live us a note and we would stop parking there.
However, today we have had a NGP notice for not parking in allocated bay. We don't have to display any parking permit so not sure how they know unless the owner has informed them or they have registered registrations for that space. There are signs displayed by NGP outside but none in the underground parking where the PCN was given.
Anyway, obviously we're a bit in the wrong but £75 also seems unreasonable. I guess the normal tactic should be ignore it, but is there anything else worth knowing or anyone else had experience of this situation or NGP?
