Job situation dire

I've been looking at the jobcentrewebsite for this past 6 months, the only jobs that ever appear are bar/waiter/waitress type work, or cleaning, not a great selection really, Im in the Cookstown area, its dire. Anyone else notice this or is it just me?

not just you, that is fairly common across the country.

the crazy thing is that the government goes on about there being a skills shortage in this country when there are millions with many skills and degrees on the dole who can't find any decent work.

the only occupation where there is a skills shortage is in the government, you don't need any qaulifications to be an MP and it shows

It's not just you! I'm down near Newry, and it's pretty dire here too.

Are you actually looking for a job in the Cookstown area? Or would you consider a move to Belfast? A move to Belfast - or a willingness to commute - would probably enhance your chances. Moving isn't the big answer of course, especially if you've a house to sell or rent out, as unemployment figures are high all over. I think people already in employment are sitting tight in what they've got, therefore vacancies aren't coming up. Not many firms are expanding these days either, so there's a distinct lack of new jobs being created. It's worth keeping an eye on websites for specific companies, for the NHS, education boards etc and nijobs.com etc as well as the job centre website.

I was in the job centre in Newry last week. The woman I spoke to said that a vacancy they had put on the website that morning was pulled by 11.00am. This was due to the firm advertising being swamped with more phone calls from people wanting application forms than they had ever anticipated, and so they decided to stop advertising. So I suppose you've got to be on the ball now more than ever and grab opportunities when you spot them.

    The whole situation is sh*te.

I was looking for a month or so and it appeared to me that there were more than enough jobs there, but they tended to want skills and experience and, often, anything less was just not good enough. It is silly because often the skills are there and an individual merely needs a short while to gain the experience. Anyhow.... as suggested, try other websites. I have no idea about your background but the jobcentre website never even registered on my search. Try the likes of Nijobs, loadzajobs and even try the likes of monster and other bigger websites (all you need do is narrow your 'area' search on such nationwide engines). Fingers crossed for you.

Good luck. I haven't been 'out there' looking for a while but I'm nearly finished training for a new job and I'll be on the market again in February. I can't remember which days the jobs are in the papers. Are public sector jobs still on a Tuesday in Bel Tel and Thursday in the Irish News?
I notice that in a specialist publication I receive, there are very few jobs going, whereas in the past there was a reasonable selection. The jobs drought must be UK-wide.

Yes, Thursday = Irish News jobs day. However you can save yourself a few pennies and a trip to the shop by clicking into https://www.irishnews.com where they very kindly put the entire job section in all its glory.

I personally am not qualified to drive lorries, however I do take your point about years of experience and still only having minimum wage or thereabouts jobs available. However as much as it irritates me minimum wage is always better than nothing. I have applied for a job for 3 days a week for four weeks (ie get the boot just in time for Christmas, jingle bells) and am actually feeling excited about it after three months of nothingness. So what if I have 20 or so years more experience than they need and a list of qualifications a page long. I need the money!!! I think as well it'll never be to your disadvantage to meet more people and try new things. Just keep your eyes and ears open for better suited opportunities while you've got a bit of money coming in.

It baffles me how the average wage in N.I is £25K? There are no oppertunities out there thats the sad bit, I should know, I;ve been trying to get out of my current job since I started 3 years ago.

If I look at jobrapido which searches the jobcentre and all agencies in my area we have the following for this week.

3 x Staff Nurses (Listed in wrong town)
1 x Drop Driver (Min wage)
1 x Sales Administrator (Min wage)
3 x Counter staff jobs for chip shops (Min wage)

Thats it, thats what you have got, and thats what its always like

You have my sympathy - it took me nine years to escape a job that I hated. At one stage I went for over five years without even getting an interview, despite sending off hundreds of application forms. And its not because I'm lazy, too fussy, expected too much or anything like that, but with hindsight what probably held me back most was that after the first year or so my confidence was knocked so badly that I began to doubt myself. So, I'm no expert, but I would say confidence and positivity are key. Once you start feeling that there's no point, it comes across, and if you don't believe you will be successful, then the person reading your application form is hardly likely to disagree.

    Good luck.
