Am i missing something here? Where does that explain why Paypal are charging the OP £1.25 to use his Visa Debit?

The fact here is that they never charged for this using Solo or Maestro but are charging for using Visa debit.

In addition, the document mentions foreign currency. You can have paypal use sterling and therefore no foreign currency would be involved.

The would still make the charge, though.

This is something they must fix.

It doesn't - it says Natwest will if it's charged in a foreign currency and the £1.25 fee marries up exactly.

There have also been posts on the boards about some banks charging "foreign" fees when the recipient is in a foreign country (as Paypal are), regardless of whether the transaction is in Sterling or not. I guess YB was offering a suggestion, but I suspect he's right.

Much as I think it's wrong, no it isn't.

It's their policy, and so long as they make the charges visible through Ts & Cs we have to play by their rules. Sneaky, but not illegal yet.

There's another user on the EBay board who is also getting £1.25 charges on his Natwest card when using PayPal...

Unfortunately, the system won't allow me to post a link to the thread but see "PayPal charge?" by pg2114 which is, at the time of writing, on page 2.

    8. Foreign transaction charges
When we debit a transaction in a foreign currency,
either at cash machines or at point of sale, the amount
is converted into sterling (using our prevailing
exchange rate) and a transaction fee of 2.75% is
added. This is known as the Exchange Rate
Transaction Fee. Where you withdraw foreign currency
from a cash machine or make a point of sale
transaction in a foreign currency, you will also have to
    pay the following charges:
    • cash machine (ATM) withdrawals – 2% of the sterling
transaction amount (minimum £2, maximum £5).
    • point of sale transactions – flat fee of £1.25 per
    transaction.
They say foreign currency. I would hardly believe they mean to include Sterling into their concept of foreign currency.

So as far as they charge £1.25 for transactions where the billing currency is Sterling, this is wrong and has to be fixed.

Why is it only then with Visa debit and not Maestro or Solo?

Here is my thread, where I have experienced the same issue.

NatWest and PayPal are both refusing to help, so I am getting absolutely nowhere
