my friend & I run a Breakfast Club, anywhere between 6 & 20 of us get together on the second Sunday of the month & have a cooked breakfast
she, Cooking Chairperson, & I, Cooking Vice Chairperson, do all the err ... cooking. the division of labour is usually determined by how hungover either or both of us is :D

    we usually have ...
    bacon, thick cut unsmoked back
eggs, fried usually, or once in a while scrambled
    sausages
    black pudding
    tomatoes
    mushrooms
    tattie scones
    beans
lightly fried onions (not traditional, but I'm told they help metabolise the fat in the brekkie)

we buy the ingredients from different local butchers or shops & award them points & if they're consisitently excellent, they get a certificate or statuette

    anyway, the method ...
the halved tomatoes go on first in the top of the pre-heated oven (we sometimes sprinkle on crushed chillies topped with brown sugar)
then the sausages, dry fried, they have enough fat in them. at the same time the black pud goes on in a separate pan, again no oil
when they're done they go in a dish in the oven on a lower shelf than the tomatoes. they don't suffer from keeping warm
rinse out & dry the pans & stir fry the onions in a little oil
then the bacon goes under the pre-heated grill
when the onions are done they go in a bowl & into the oven to keep warm
more oil in the onion pan & lightly undercook the mushrooms, once 'done', put in bowl in oven
put beans in bowl in microwave or pan on hob & heat
heat & oil both frying pans & fry the tattie scones, put to keep warm when crisp
then clean, re-oil & reheat pans & fry eggs
all this time keeping an eye on the progress of the bacon
put everything that isn't already in a dish into serving dishes, place on table & serve buffet-style :)

personally I'd have toast & hash browns too. my favourite breakfast being a 'NewYork' served to me once in Edinburgh consisting of ... bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, beans, hash browns & toast. lovely :)

lol, June 11th around 11.30 :rotfl:
  • We usually go out for a cooked breakfast but this time we realised we had all the ingredients in and thought it might be nice to make our own.

I didn't realise however that fried potatoes took so long, I broke both of the fried eggs (one with a spatula trying to get it out and one when I was putting it in!) and I didn't realise that the fried bread would soak up all the fat (seems obvious now!) and I would have to add more.

Luckily it all tasted yummy! But the bacon and mushrooms were cold by the time I had finished everything else.

Would anyone care to share their timings for a cooked breakfast, or any other tips? This is what I did:

Peeled & chopped potatoes. Put water on to boil in small saucepan. Washed up frying pan.
Put potatoes in to parboil. Put bacon in frying pan and turned on to medium.
Drained potatoes. Added chopped mushroom to bacon in pan.
Added potatoes. Removed DF's bacon (he likes it only just cooked).
    Spent ages waiting for potatoes.
Rinsed out potato pan and put baked beans in to heat up.
Removed mushrooms. Arranged potatoes so all were touching bottom of pan and added some oil.
Removed my bacon. Finished off potatoes.
Cooked both eggs. Cooked fried bread.
    Served everything!

Really I should have put the potatoes in a lot earlier, I think.

I'd be interested in the timings too, as I always struggle to get it all hot at the same time. What I can't see, though, is where you cooked the sausages, tomatoes and black pudding?
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • Hi there  We have an existing thread on timing the Perfect Breakfast ;) I'll add this to keep suggestions together.

Thanks, I did search but this thread didn't come up for some reason. Lots of suggestions here!

Hehe well I was going to do sausages but I hate the smell of sausage fat when they are done in the pan and they spit too much so decided to be lazy and leave them out (didn't fancy washing up grill for the sake of 3 sausages either) - and I love black pudding and tomatoes but we don't usually have breakfast in so didn't have any BP and DF hates tomatoes so we didn't have any of those either :p

The thread has been merged now so there are lots of suggestions to work through.

  • I do sausage, bacon & mushrooms in a large griddle pan, I put a knob of butter on the mushrooms, beans in a small pan, when everything is nearly cooked, I start the toast in the toaster & crack the eggs into non-stick pan with a little oil. I find it easier now, just doing it for 2 or 3 of us, I used to have to do it for 14 people!!!

We have a cooked Breakfast whenever hubby isnt working on a Sunday morning.I'm usually up first and after I've made a brew I put the sausages in the oven on a low light. Then I get on with my ironing after my ironing I put another baking tray in the oven with bacon, tomatoes, fish cakes.I crank the oven heat up and open beans and fry bread and eggs etc and serve. As the fried bread is cooked I put it in the bottom of the oven to keep warm
