Have moved into a flat with white meter heating but some rooms need a heater, what are the most economical ones?

They all cost the same to run per kilowatt as, unlike gas, they are all nearly 100% efficient at what they do

Depending on what sort of heat you need will decide up to a point, if you just want a quick boost for a while, say dressing, then a fan heater will be quick & easy

I have gas heating so will leave it there and wait for someone with electric heating

Any other opinions? At the moment the humidity in the flat is too high - between 70 and 80%+. No double glazing...

No need for opinions - the post above is factual.

The heat output is exactly the same with all types of heater(for the same running costs.

If the humidity is too high, you need a dehumidifier.
  • Cardew's right, electric heating is the only thing that will ever be as close to 100% efficient. I think the only part of electric heating that is inefficient is the slight hum it can sometimes make, as the noise is unwanted. Even the light which is produced is visible heat, so you can consider electric heating to be 99.9999% efficient (unless there is another factor involved such as the fan in a fan heater as it produces a bit more noise).

The only difference between electric heaters is how heat is distributed. A convection heater chucks air upwards. A fan heater blows heat out vertically. A storage heater heats up bricks overnight when special rate electricity can be purchased and convects it out. The running costs of all of these are the same.

If the fan is noisy that is caused by friction in the bearing.......... friction produces heat !

Either air the place regularly or use a dehumidifier, as a damp place always feels colder than it is. If it's just you buy an electric underblanket and decent duvet for your bed and an fleecy electric overblanket or old duvet on the sofa. Far cheaper to run than heating the entire room, especially if you don't have decent insulation. I managed two winters with no heating using this system.

  • Spaceboy Have a look at Infrared Heating, they are energy efficient and can help with condensation, however you also need to look at ventilation and insulation

They are energy efficient - at 100% they are exactly the same as my Granny's 1/2/3/ bar fire.

Storage heaters are much cheaper to run than other forms of heating because energy companies offer special tarrifs for them. Only one company (E.ON) offer what is known as heatwise, this gives cheap rate off-peak heating that feeds only the heating and hot water. typically this cuts in overnight and for a few hour late afternoon as a boost to keep you warm in the evening.

you need to understand the controls on your storage heaters to avoid wasted heat or to avoid getting cold later in the day. DONT USE THE BOOST BUTTON it is very expensive.

However you pay considerably more for the rest of your electricity!!

There are masses of off-peak tariffs - particularly in Scotland. These have all sorts of combinations of rates and times in a 24 hour period. Often the whole house(not just heating and Hot Water) gets the cheap rate(s).
