So you'd rather potentially lose out on £2.24 and £4.45 than 10p a item which gives you two goes of selling? Some peoples thinking astounds me.
Also wondering what people did inbetween dvds needing to be inclusive and free 99p listings coming in.

Well I wouldn't lose out because I've sold only DVDs that have been selling for more...the rest that have a very low chance of selling or that might make just 50p profit if I was lucky I've not risked it, and have chosen to sell to magpie. Or in the past have given away to friends/charity. Not sure what you mean by the second comment.

Also if everyone starts putting the starting prices at postage costs + 10%, then it defeats the object of "free" postage anyway. But ebay get to make more money, one because if people will pay insertion fees to start on a higher starting price and two because ebay get to now make 10% on postage, where as before they didn't.

Also in packaging up my sold items tonight I've realised now that my buyers have no choice but to have the postage method I have picked (2nd class). I suppose they could contact me and arrange first, but it's all extra time and effort on everyones behalf. Where as with a normal listing I used to offer a choice of 1st, 2nd and recorded.

I've never managed to sell a book on Amazon before. I always put them at the cheapest allowed cost, but no luck. Has this changed? Can you choose any price you want now? This was about 3 years ago.

Play.com was something I hadn't thought of. Thanks.

You can still put these, it's only your 1st postage option that has to be inclusive.

Play and Amazon fees are a lot worse than Ebay, and Play is also inclusive p+p, but I agree they are useful for some things, with no listing fees.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I am a professional ebay seller. I work hard at my job, I love my job, if you think it's silly that's your problem not mine. :p

But now I only listed 3 of them and 2 games. 2 were boxsets (over 600g) and 1 was a game with 2 guns weighing over a kilo. I put a starting price of 99p for free insertion and knew these items would sell for more than the postage, but if they didn't I could be losing money.
So... you'd rather list for 99p (which it could possibly sell for) and have to pay the postage yourself, than pay 10p and be able to start the auction at £5?

How much would you have started the auctions for when <99p listings weren't free? Or would you just have not bothered?

  • Never heard of Craigslist, will check them out thanks

this outlines the whole reason why people put up with crap policies and endless trouble, cause EVERYBODY has heard of eBay and you NEVER get 'never heard of eBay'

I'm sick of Ebay too but since they have a monopoly on the market in the UK there is no real alternative. I've sold the odd large 'collection only' item on Gumtree but listing on Gumtree doesn't get nearly as much exposure as Ebay eg I had a rucksack listed for £15 on Gumtree and didn't even have any enquires. I then listed it on Ebay (on the free listing day) and the final bid was £19 + £10 postage (which I refunded £4 as it was cheaper to send than I thought).

If you have a bunch od DVDs which you don't think will sell just wait until the next free listing day. I lised mine on the last free listing day and sold half of them (and not th e ones I was predicting would sell better).

It will be difficult now for any other new auction site to compete with Ebay. For example in New Zealand Trademe (no listing fees, just final value fees) has successfully competed with Ebay but it was established before Ebay and online auctions became as popular as they are now.

I find I'm much more selective with what I list on eBay now - everything else, including the high value stuff, waits until a free listing day.

Ebay are making it harder to sell for smaller sellers and I guess they get more money from the bigger sellers and the bigger sellers generate less headaches for them. However it still stands if you want to sell something small then Ebay is your best bet. As for the free postage you just add the postage costs to your start price. Everyone is in the same boat.
As for books/DVD's/games/CD's there seems to be so many of the popular ones selling it does not seem worth it. Give them to a charity shop or sell at a car boot.
