Hairdresser with disabled access?

Hi - hope you can help. My mum's a pensioner and has recently lost use of her legs so is completely wheelchair bound. She always went to get her hair permed at a local salon, but now finds that a) the wheelchair won't fit through the door - so we borrowed a narrower one but b) their basins are attached to the salon seats - she can't get out of her wheelchair so its useless!
Does anyone know of a hairdressing salon where someone can get their hair permed whilst remaining in their wheelchair - OR does anyone know of a home hairdresser who does perms - we've made some enquiries but most home hairdressers only seem to do haircutting, not perms.
Any ideas? She lives in East Belfast but we're getting desperate so willing to travel a reasonable distance.
PS: If I were a hairdresser I know a niche market that is totally untapped........

Thanks N Ireland members, I know you'll come up trumps!

  • I don't know of any salons that are wheelchair friendly but how about phoning some of the local residential homes? They often have hairdressers coming in and might be able to give you some names. The Ulster hospital has a hairdresser who comes in. She mainly does the 'shampoo and set' but again might be able to give you some names. Also the wee free paper usually has ads for mobile hairdressers.

  • Hi

My friend does the "shampoo and set brigade" around working in a nursing home ( not in your area - sorry) so trying the local homes etc is a great idea, they usually have a "front wash in the homes too. Not sure if your mum could go in there???. Not sure if Insurace etc would allow, but worth a try.

Not sure this is such a niche market thou, like I said my friend does older clients and they pay her £7 for a shampoo and set, it is an hours work and for me soooo not worth the hard work. In a salon while one client is under the dryer you could be putting rollers in another so doubling your money. Every April when she puts her prices up they all moan and talk about going elsewhere, but nobody else will do it and cheaper!

Just my 2p worth there as people think hairdressing is an easy job, but its physically hard work (especially bent over a wheelchair thats high cannot be adjusted) for very little money, but I do love it.

    Good Luck
I am pleased to give hairdressing help or advice, but a thank you doesn't go a miss.

Anyone notice that about 90% of beauty salons in local towns are upstairs (above shops).
Is this legal? Surely this is discriminatory?

Sheer Bliss at the top of the Ormeau Road is on the ground floor and is (i think)wheelchair accessible. Not sure about their capacity to perm her hair whilst remaining in her wheelchair. You could give them a ring to find out on 028 90644599

the salon i work in is fully accessible. but we are in bournemouth so no good for you.

im surprised that you are having trouble to find one that will accomodate a wheelchair. our basins are seperate units to the seats so no problems there for wheelchairs.

if you ever come to bournemouth on holiday come and see us lol
