Royal Mail do they refund postage for lost items?

Royal Mail has lost an ebay item that I sent to Thailand back in June. I have completed and sent a P58INT compensation claim form. My claim is for the price of the item £10 plus the postage charge of £14 which the buyer is awaiting for a refund.

Just wondering if Royal Mail will also compensate for the postage that I spent in sending the package to Thailand, which again is another £14?

RM change the rules a lot depending on who deals with the claim. They usually pay out item cost, plus actual postage paid (Ie not the total shown on the ebay page).

Overseas claims can take weeks to finish and you shouldn't make your buyer wait for your refund from RM, the buyer should get a refund from you and you should then sort out your own losses with RM.

So what you are saying is that Royal Mail do not refund the postage that I paid for sending the item? If so that seems very unfair because they lost the parcel and I will be out of pocket.
  • No.
They pay you the actual postage you paid to the post office.

AS per my original post, they will usually refund the actual postage cost that you paid to send the item. What they don't usually pay is any extra, so if you charged £14 postage and it cost £14 then you are fine, if however you charged £14 and it actually cost only £12 then you lose the £2.
