Hi Everyone,
I parked my company car on a main road as i was working away and when I came out it had its window smashed and my Laptop and other items hade been stolen.
My company are saying that because the laptop wasnt in the boot i am not covered.
It was on the foot rest behind the passengers seat.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Its a common exclusion for Insurance policies to exclude theft of items from a car unless they are either locked in a secure / concealed boot or locked in a the glove compartment.
Leaving a lap top any where else in the car is asking for it to be stolen0 -
The strange thing is another employee left his laptop on his dining table full view from his window of his house he then went out and when he came back it was stolen he even admited to not locking his house door!,and the insurance payed out for that?
This tells me then that wether it be your car or your home if its in view you shouldnt be covered at all then?0 -
Home Insurance is completely different, most policies do not contain a requirement that you look your house doors or windows (Some people opt in for a discount or its a requirement due to their post code etc for a requirement to have certain locks). Their policy would be subject to them not acting "Recklessly".
If you apply your arguement on not leaving valuables on display in your home then anyone with a decent television would always need to keep their curtains shut.0 -
The policy document is the point of reference on this one.0

Understanding your auto insurance policy is critical to understanding what can make your premiums rise. Your car insurance rates are based on many different factors, and two of these are your driving record and accident history. If you have been involved in an accident, whether you caused it or it was the fault of the other driver, your vehicle insurance premiums may go up. This can confuse some consumers, because if you did not cause the accident, why should your auto insurance costs go up?

Unfortunately, this is only one factor, and something that occurred six months ago, when combined with this accident, may make you a higher car Understanding your auto insurance policy is critical to understanding what can make your premiums rise. insurance risk and raise your vehicle insurance premiums. Most factors involved in setting your auto insurance premiums are known, but even industry insiders do not know every factor considered, or how much weight each company gives a specific factor. It is known, however, that accidents are a major consideration that is used by vehicle insurance companies when they decide your specific insurance policy costs and risks.

the difference in price between various companies can be significant. What one company may consider a high risk factor another company may not view as so important.
Be realistic about the value of your car.
Most of us have an inflated view as to what our car is worth. When asked the value of your vehicle during the insurance quotation process, people will often state an amount that is unrealistic and above the real value of the car. People do this as they believe that this is what they will get back from the insurance company in the event of a claim. The reality is that the company will only pay out what the car is worth at the time of the claim and not what you stated for the quote. In fact, by giving a high and unrealistic value, you can increase your car insurance premium as this is often a factor affecting your final price.0 -

The policy documentation whether it's for home, travel or car insurance clearly states under what circumstances you will be covered for theft.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Acidc4 - every firm I've ever worked for has insisted laptops are not left unattended. If left in a car, they must be in a locked boot. Hope you don't work for the MOD, Nationwide BS or the DWP.
Do you not see all the signs around these days about not leaving valuables in sight?0
