reverting to one screen in XP

I have a HP 17in laptop running XP and used to be able to attach a second monitor which displayed my desktop.
I then needed to extend my desltop and was talked through the changes, now I need to revert back to one desktop duplicated on second monitor.
been into properties clicked on monitor 2, unchecked `extend desktop to this monitor`, apply etc, second desktop goes off then back on but nothing changes. Unchecking this appears to just disable the second monitor.
Basically I want to go from having one desktop across both screens to having my laptops desktop duplicated on the second monitor as it used to be.
Anyone se what I am missing?
