Natwest Default

Hey,

So sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I have just got a copy of my credit report and it appears that i have two defaults from NatWest back for accounts i had a couple of years ago when i was 15, The two accounts have had charges applied to them for reasons i cant remember and i could not afford to pay them as i was still in school so i left the charges not knowing what would happen. Both accounts have been defaulted for £120 each. These are ruening my life! i can not go to university as i cannot open a student account, i cant even open a normal bank account, i have to use a very basic one from halifax. I just think its unfair that they have defaulted the accounts for small ammounts, I remember phoning them around a year ago now regarding the accounts and was told that the debt was wiped and the accounts were closed but they havnt updated this on my credit file.

What can i do to remove these defaults? i need my life back.

Any help would be fantastic!

Oh and i had never recieved any notice of default! and i am positive on that! the defaults where placed on the account 21/08/200

  • is this the correct section?
  • you can't be charged when you are under 18, you can't be defaulted when you are under 18 and you can't be defaulted on bank charges alone regardless how odl you are. if your dates/ages are right, pursue it with the financial ombudsman straight away

You need to sort this out ASAP otherwise the defaults will stay on your credit file for six years and you will not get any mainstream credit or a normal bank account until until they dropped off.
  • The charges where applied to the account before i was 18 but the account was defaulted 2 months after i turned 18. Should i contact the banks first or go stright to the financial ombudsman?

    Thanks for the help guys
  • personally, i would do both. can't be too quick for this kind of thing

I would complain that the charges themselves caused the default and that had the charges not been levied prior to you reaching 18 years of age that the default would not have occurred.

  • I treid phoning natwest and gave them the account numbers of the accounts and was told they couldnt help me as the accounts have now been closed and if i wanted to talk about them i would need to go into my local branch. :s

I think you need to start the process from scratch. Ask for a complete list of charges on the account from the time it was opened to the time it was closed.
When you get them then add up the charges and post again. For reference, how much were you defaulted for?

    I surprised this was missed.

In tandem with following the advice immediately above, you should make sure you have joined the company who have supplied your credit file eg Experian or similar (you can get lower cost deals, but remember to cancel once you have finished).

Once joined you should ask for Dispute to be recorded against these particular files, for the reason you have outlined. What will happen then is that the credit reference co. will contact the lender exploring the issues for the default. Hopefully, you will get a positive answer.

Failing that, and assuming the bank formally reject your complaint, lodge a complaint with the Financial Ombudsman Service.

    Good luck!
