Christmas shoebox appeal!

I was in the supermarket the other day and saw that surprisingly it's already christmas. There's silly old me thinking it's only just October but nope, there's christmas displays already.

This year if you're planning to do a shoebox appeal there'll be loads of ideas and chat in this thread. I'm doing mine for link romania and I can't wait, I have a blast doing them!

Would love your input :)

I would love to do one of these, but would prefer it to be for a charity that is not religious. Does anyone know of any?
  • Is there one where we can send something to memebers of the armed forces serving abroad?
    I hate migraines.
  • The Rotary Club do boxes throughout the year (search for Rotary Shoebox appeal, I can't do a link as new user apparently) and don't have a religious agenda in doing so. Link Romania also talks on their website about education and spreading the word of god and I just don't think that giving gifts should be 'paid for' in this way. Having said that, I contacted Nigel Danby of the Rotary Club a while back and he's having difficulty getting our local Rotary association to get in touch with me. I'd recommend getting in touch with them if you want a 'god-free' option though!

The following website doesn't exactly use a shoebox, instead it uses a backpack:

I don't like the idea of gifts being paid for like that but I honestly don't think linkromania do that. There's not a vast amount about God on their website and on their homepage:
We are a Christian organisation but we support projects and people regardless of religious background, colour or creed.

They do talk about taking the love of god to people in practical ways but I've looked through the website and I can't see anything about spreading the gospel and very few references to god or christianity. In short it doesn't seem preachy.

A lot of these shoebox charities are christian based. After all Jesus was pretty hot on being loving and giving and Christmas is a christian festival. Just because they're Christian doesn't mean that people have to "buy" the shoeboxes.

Apparently they have asked for family boxes only due to the postal system being overstretched last year.

Don't forget to keep an eye out in the grabbit forums, I just got this bargain for the boxes, it'll make a lovely present!

"Support our soldiers" are doing a shoebox appeal for the armed services. Google "sos support our soldiers" for information. I don't have any connection with them, I just saw a piece about in in our local paper.
