Travel insurance claim - House insurance relationship - Help please!

Grateful for any advice.

My husband and I had all our luggage stolen from our locked rental car on the way to the airport this week. We are trying to work out where best to claim : either on our travel insurance policy or house insurance policy (we have personal possessions cover away from home). We had a number of things in the car that are classed as 'valuables' on our travel insurance ....CDs, DVDs, glasses, netbook etc so under that policy they are not covered. However I did think the best place to claim would be our travel insurance as we are just about to renew our house insurance and I didn't want to possibly increase that premium.

However from a read of this forum, there is a suggestion that it is likely that my travel insurance company would possibly look to share the liability of any claim with our contents insurance anyway? Has this happened to anyone and does this 'joint claim' then affect the renewal premiums on both policies? If this is the case, is it better just to put the claim on the contents insurance, then that way most of the stuff in the car would be covered?

The whole thing was completely upsetting and I am just finding the process of claiming adding to that nightmare.......can anyone give me any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Almost all modern policies will contain a 'contribution clause' which will allow insurer 1 to reclaim a proportion of the claim from insurer 2. Even if you would put the claim in with your home insurance then it could still recover from your travel insurers.

If the insurers are doing it properly you would get two payments - one from each for the relevant proportion of their costs. If they are doing it how insurers normally do it one will issue you full payment and then sort it out between themselves.

Where abouts in the car were the items that were stolen eg in a locked boot, glove box or on or under the seats

...for your answers. We have decided to claim on the house insurance.
