            Hi Hotcookie,
I too would use the cider vinegar. These threads have more opinions:
 Alternative to White Wine Vinegar??
Ideas for red and white wine vinegar?
I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the ideas together.

            Thanks all,
I did use the cider vinegar, and the piri piri chicken was delicious-I used regular chillis (1.5) rather than birds eye cos my OH is a wuss, but it wasn't spicy enough, so next time will use more, or use birds eyes. Quite acidic tho, with juice of 2 lemons, and 4tbsps vinegar.... but yum yum 0 0

Just thought I'd update this thread with meringues. Wanted to make some tonight and the recipe called for white wine vinegar. I didn't have any, and I couldn't find any information on what to substitute it for on the forum.
You can substitute it for distilled white vinegar - apparently it does the same job but doesn't taste as sweet. So I just straight swapped 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar for 1 tablespoon white vinegar.
I'm pretty sure it's going to turn out fine, cooking as we speak but I will update if there are any problems.
Edit: The meringue has a slight whiff of vinegar to it - but I can't imagine that'd be a problem once it's all loaded up with cream etc. It certainly didn't taste of it.0
