If it's a BOS branded card, then you cannot pay this at Halifax branches.

Turn over your statement and look at the back - that explains all the ways that you can pay.

But if i pay by debit card over the phone to them shouldnt that get processed straight away?

It dont say nothing about how to pay with debit card,

And when i paid with my debit card, they took my bank account number not my Debit card number,

sorry i should say im trying to avoid the late payment fee, need to pay it before the 7th, but they say it would take 4 working days to process payment, (isnt all this stuff automatic i.e computer processed)

got statement late due to RM strike, BOS said they are not liable if you do not receive your statement,

Do you bank with Halifax or Bank of Scotland?

If so, and you've already made a payment over the phone, you should be okay. Allow two working days (not including the day you telephoned BoS) for payment to clear.

It doesn't usually make make any difference if debit card payments are made with a debit card issued by the same bank as the credit card you are trying to pay off. The credit card issuer is acting as a merchant to accept the debit card payment - they may use a 3rd party processor and may not be able to identify an "on-us" transaction.

Most card issuers will value date a cleared funds payment on the date it was received e.g. if you pay cash over the counter at a branch. It may still take a few days for the payment to be appear on the account though and you can still sometimes be charged late fees - although you can usually get these refunded if you complain. However, a debit card payment is unlikely to be classed as cleared funds - even if it is authorised.

Its an obvious piece of advice, and someone will undoubtedly give it if I don't, but you should really consider setting up a minimum payment direct debit to ensure you don't get caught out.

As an aside, I don't think it is fair for BoS to refuse payments made over the counter at a Halifax branch. After all, they are both part of the same company - they even trade under the same banking licence. I would expect that they will take the payment, but will insist you fill out a giro slip and they will forward it on to the BoS processing centre. If you get a late fee, you could try making a complaint to get it reversed - you may not get very far, but it may be worth a try if you have no other way of making the payment in time.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
