Moving into my first house, need credit advice

I'm moving into my first house at the end of the month and, right now, wish that I'd started saving.

The house that's come up for rent is absolutely ideal, and we're lucky to have got it. However, it's unfurnished.

We're currently looking for a bed, a gas cooker, a refrigerator and a freezer. I've posted ads on Freecycle but I'm not hopeful.

In order to get us through the first couple of months, I've today applied for a Tesco Credit Card (which, as Martin's guide points out, is interest free for 12 months) but I was declined. I've applied for a Sainsbury's card (also free) and they're getting back to me within 10 days. Again, I'm not hopeful. I've had four changes of address in the last five years which I don't think is going in my favour.

Assuming that they knock me back, I'm not sure which way to go. Obviously Argos have cheap furniture and appliances and I'm thinking of applying to them for a card, even if it is a whopping 30-odd percent. I'm going to pay it all off within 6 months anyway, so can stand the hit of a few quid interest.

I've applied to my bank for an increased overdraft and I'm waiting for them to get back to me.

So I guess I'm just asking, what would you do in this situation (short of sleeping on the floor ;)) ?

Cheers

BillyQ

    well
we did sleep on the floor (ok with a camping matress)
    a camping stove (twin burner)
two garden chairs (from parents so no cost)

and yes... you guessed it, we didn't use a CC or a loan ... we just spent each month whatever we could afford.
