John Lewis Partnership card

Is this card difficult to get? only we were declined last year, and i tried again yesterday and was also declined. Have never been declined credit before apart from a nationwide flex account, again do not understand why. Lots of cards/loan have been repaid and cancelled too. Only want the card so i can quick scan the shopping.

There hasn't been a lot of comment here one way or t'other.
I can only tell you that I applied last month and got instant acceptance.

May I ask whether or not your credit files were checked on both occasions?

A possible reason perhaps. You don't already have an HSBC card do you as this card is underwritten by them ?

I'm fairly sure that you can do the quick scan without having a partnership card - might be worth asking Waitrose about that.

The credit files were not checked when we applied last year, yesterday i applied in my partners name and then in my name both were declined. I didn't know the card was underwritten by HSBC we both have no accounts with them.

I can do the quick scan at the moment but still need to queue up at the end to pay and theres often a few people waiting, but only one person serving, and if someone needs to have their shopping re-scanned you can be there forever. The lady in waitrose told me i need a partnership card to be able to scan and pay with a card of my choice at the machine, you don't even need to pay with the damn partnership card just scan it first. I'm quite annoyed by this as we spend quite a bit in john lewis/waitrose and theres no reason for them to consider us a risk.

Lenders' procedures vary, but credit checks cost, so if there's something on application that rules you both out, your credit files won't be checked.

You say you've never been turned down for credit facilities (apart from Nationwide) May I ask which credit cards you have at the mo?
Also, whether you've moved recently? Have you both applied successfully for credit cards from your current address?

Don't take it personally. It's not a personal insult.

It's a credit risk decision. Based on your credit reports, they (namely HFC, part of HSBC) consider you not necessarily to be a risk but as an "undesirable lend." Yes, they are different. How much you spend has nothing to do with it.

If you feel this is truly unfair, appeal to them in writing - get a copy of your reports from Equifax/Experian, and attach them to a letter explaining why you believe their decision to be unfair and asking them to reconsider. Ask that if they are unwilling to alter their decision, they explain the reason for their decline.
