Old Fashioned Toilet / Good Flush

Hi there

Firstly, apologies for the topic....

I have a property that I have recently started letting out and it seems that the toilet have a pretty poor flush (leading to frequent blockages and some measure of distress for my tenants). My plumber believes there is nothing essentially wrong with the toilet, just that it may be cheap and imperfections in the shape of the pan mean it doesn't get the 'oomph' to do the job properly.

It is one of the new-fangled toilets with the little push buttons on top and the small cistern. Does anyone know where I might still be able to get the old-fashioned style toilet with the handle and the bigger cistern? Failing that, can anyone recommend a new-fangled toilet that really does the job?

Many thanks

When I asked about the old fashioned style loos, I was advised that because there's not so many around any more, the quality of the newer ones isn't as good as it used to be.
Maybe worth spending a bit more on a more reputable brand, if you can.

Ideal standard do them - not sure how much use they are to you. (further down the page.) but I don't know if you can get the cistern on its own.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

One obvious thing to check is that they are not being over enthusiastic with the paper (and obviously not flushing anything OTHER than paper and body waste).

Also I've been in a couple of places where there is a sign up asking you to flush half way through if you need to use lots of paper. And ours - not a new one! - has been known to block at regular intervals, and I KNOW it is DS3 and his tendency to use half a roll at a time!

So, while you continue to try to sort the problem completely, it may be worth suggesting that they don't wait until they have finished to flush, but do an interim flush.

Of course if it's a slow filling cistern that's not going to help a lot ... and it's not very green. But given the choice between being green and not blocking the toilet, I know which I'd choose!

  • Set the half flush to the same as a full flush, you can control the half flush water amount. Ladies do use too much paper at a time.

It's not ME blocking our toilet on a regular basis, I assure you! :rotfl: I wish I knew why our youngest son feels the need to use so many yards, but he's resisting suggestions that I watch his technique! :rotfl:

Train 'em young, is all I can say, don't know where I went wrong with him though.
